Boston is a pretty amazing city. Sure, it's not New York or LA, but it doesn't need to be - they already exist. There's no other city quite like Boston, and it's pretty hard not to fall in love with it. Whether you love it for its ultimate college-town vibes or its extreme sports fanaticism, its history or its beauty, Boston has something for everyone. Literally. Here are the top ten things you must do when you visit:
1. Dinner in the North End
The North End is absolutely charming, and walking through it makes you feel like you've been transported back three hundred years ago. Minus the cars, of course. This area's famous for its Italian food, and rightfully so. There's no better treat than dinner in the North End. I'm extremely partial to Lucca and Mamma Maria, but you'd be hard pressed to find a bad place to eat. After dinner, you could head to Mike's or Modern Pastry, but in my - and any Bostonian's - opinion, they're tourist traps, and rather overrated. Instead, try Bova's. Their chocolate mousse is enough to make a man sin.
2. Visit the Aquarium
There are penguins, for God's sake! The three-story fish tank in the middle is also pretty amazing. Look out for the sea turtles. Remember: rip it, roll it, and punch it!
3. Have a Picnic in the Commons
Stop by Sweetgreen and pick up a salad, grab some food to go from Whole Food's, or pack your own lunch. The Commons are always bustling, and it's a great spot to puppy watch (or people watch) and to take in some pretty breathtaking views of the city. Bonus points if you go during the spring and see the public gardens' spectacular displays of flowers. Yay, vegetation!
4. Shop on Newbury
This is a given. With everything from Forever 21 to Burberry, it's easy to break the bank on this stunning street. There are plenty of places to stop and grab a bite to eat, like Sonsie or Joe's. For dessert, make sure you stop in at Amorino and get some rose-shaped gelato. Ciao.
5. Explore the South End
I may be a little partial, but the South End is probably the best place in the city. It's drop-dead gorgeous, with brownstones and quiet, cozy neighborhoods with hidden gems - restaurants, bars, and boutiques just waiting for you to find them. It's easy to get lost for the day.
6. Go to the Prudential Building's Skywalk
I think the picture speaks for itself.
7. Kayak on the Charles
Obviously a summertime activity, but definitely a must. You get some pretty stunning views, and the Charles itself is beautiful. And who doesn't love to kayak?
8. Picnic on the Esplanade
Lots of picnicking in this city, but totally worth it. Feel free to lay out and tan while you're at it, just don't get any ideas about jumping in. Definitely not the most hygienic decision you could make.
9. Go to a Red Sox Game
Or a Bruins, Celtics, or Patriots game. Seriously, no matter what sport it is, it'll be awesome. Bostonians are nothing if not sports fans, and with such freaking good teams, why shouldn't they be?
10. Visit Faneuil Hall
The only tourist trap that is acceptable. Faneuil Hall and Quincy Market during Christmastime are pure magic. Their tree lighting may not be Rockefeller Center, but it's definitely worth standing like sardines in 30 degree weather. Believe me on this one.
