United States of America, this past week we have voted and elected our 45th president. Despite whether you are happy or sad with this outcome, it is important to remember one thing that played a vital role in the outcome of this election: communication. Communication has become increasingly popular in recent elections especially with channels that allow for easy target messages including Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, blogs, other forms of social media and media in general.
Sometimes these easy channels are great tools to have and use. Other times, and seemingly too often, people use social networks to express their political views and even develop opinions based off poorly sourced articles, memes, pictures or comments posted on social media.
However, with that being said, I must admit that I am a communicator and I am proud. I am graduating this spring with a degree in mass communications. I am proud to give a voice to the voiceless and I am proud to live in a country that allows me that right.
One of the things that drove me to purse a degree in mass communications is to have the ability to clearly share my thoughts and ideas with others. If there is one thing we should take away from this election, it would be just that. We should keep sharing our thoughts and ideas. We should keep having conversations and listening to each others opinions. The only way we will be able to find peace amid the chaos right now is to listen and accept each other's ideas. I know that the more we communicate with each other, the better we understand each other.
As a communication major, I hope that I can use my skills to better the lives of the voiceless and to keep the conversations going. We pick our majors based on our passions, ideals and hopes. This election officially affirms my choice. Further, this election can hopefully serve as a lesson to us and how we can use our college majors or skills in creative and new perspectives.
