October is a month of pumpkin patches, apple orchards, bats, ghouls, and the colors black, orange and pink. Yes, you read that right, pink. National Breast Cancer Awareness Month is here and it is in full swing. Not only should we celebrate our survivors this month, but it is important that we take action in helping to put an end to this disease.
According to the American Cancer Society, breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the United States and the second most common cancer overall. This year 231,840 women were diagnosed with breast cancer and 40,290 have died because of it.
Cancer is something that can happen to anyone. It does not discriminate. It knows no skin color, gender, or age- it can happen to the young and the old, the rich and the poor, the happiest and the saddest of people. While it is nice to have a strong support system, those affected by cancer need more than simply just a hand to hold. They need hope, funds, and most importantly, they need us.
So what can we do?
Here are some simple ways that we can contribute to this cause and fight for a cure.
1. Donate.
One of the easiest ways to show your support is to make a monetary donation to the cause. Even the smallest of donations can add up to create a huge difference. Whether you’re looking to donate specifically to research or are more interested in donating to an organization that’s primary focus is preventative care, there’s an organization out there ready to make these things happen.
2. Participate in a walk/event.
There are hundreds of breast cancer walks that are organized throughout the country. In particular, Making Strides Against Breast Cancer is one of the largest breast cancer awareness events in the nation. Prior to the walk, participants raise funds that enable the American Cancer Society to fund vital breast cancer research, support those who are affected, and help people take the proper steps to reduce their risk of breast cancer.
If you live in the Rochester area, there is a walk that will be taking place Saturday, October 24th at 9 a.m. in Rochester Municipal Park. You can sign-up here.
If you live elsewhere, you can click here to find an event in your area.
3. Purchase "pink" merchandise.
From jewelry to lunch meat, there’s a substantial amount of
products on the market that you can buy to support the cause.
You can find a list of some of these products here.
4. Spread the word.
At the very least we can show our support by educating others. Whether it’s providing people with information, encouraging friends and family to schedule a screening, or by simply wearing a pink ribbon- it is all equally as important. Every action counts.
