Things You Should Do Before Going Back To School

It's already August and you know what that means: back to school is coming up in just a few weeks. Maybe you have move ins coming up or you are still stressing finding that textbook on sale. You could be excited to send the kids back to school. Maybe you haven't even realized it's August yet! Here's some things you should do before you go back to school.

1. Go back to school shopping.

First and foremost, you should get what you need before you go back. Especially since this is the time that everything is on sale, save as much money as you can on pens and pencils. I tend to buy extra so I know I won't run out during the year when nothing is on sale.

2. Go to the beach.

This is something I wish I would have done sooner but I will stick to going a couple Sunday's before I go back to class. Go on a day trip to the beach with family and friends and just spend the day in the sun. Remember to wear sunscreen and just relax before school begins again.

3. Go to an amusement park/fair.

You don't have to ride any rides just eat something unhealthy and enjoy the sounds and smells that come along with being at the fair. Play a couple of those silly games and just enjoy life. Life is too short to stress over going back to school, so don't let it get to you.

4. Relax by the pool.

Relaxing in the sun is such a good way to relax and spend time with friends. Take a dip in the pool and splash around. Soon the weather will be getting cold again and the pools will be closing up for the winter, don't miss out while you can still go swimming and cool off from the heat that August may bring.

5. Find a local ice cream shop that makes the ice cream on site.

There are a few of these around where I am and I love going and getting a cup or cone of ice cream and sitting on the benches outside. The two that I know about around me even have the cows right on site as well. It is cool to watch the cows graze as you eat the fresh ice cream that came from them.

6. Go on a nature walk.

A lot of local parks have trails that you can walk on, find one that suits you and enjoy what nature has to offer -- the trees, flowers, and animals that surround you on your walk are just a simple reminder that there is no need to stress the little things.

7. Go through your clothes and sell or donate ones you don't wear anymore.

This is a great way to make a few extra bucks before going back to school or even just help out the community around you by donating. What are those t-shirts doing in your drawers anyway if you aren't wearing them? Just collecting dust. Make the most out of them.

8. Find a new hobby to help destress you when school is back in session.

Pick up some colored pencils and a coloring book, take dance lessons, join a new club when you get back in school, basically anything that will help you destress from everything that comes with going back to school. I personally like to play video games, color, sing, dance, and even just laying in bed with a good book can destress me after a rough day at school.

9. Make a new friend.

Going back to school means new classes with new people and classes are always easier with a friend by your side. Friends can help you study and keep you on track in your classes, if you get sick and miss a day, they can help by taking notes. And you never know, that friend you make in you English or Math class could be the friend that is there with you until the end.

10. Try something new.

Doesn't matter if you are trying a new food, new activity, or even a new route to work/school that saves time -- you should try something new. You will definitely feel better afterwards and you may even realize that it is your favorite food or favorite thing to do. But, you'll never know until you try.

11. Enjoy whatever free time you may have right now.

This may seem cliche, but between work and school when I go back, I notice my free time is slim to none and when I have it I enjoy it. Even when I get time off during the summer, I do my best to relax and enjoy what time I have off.

Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
