Things You Miss From Your Hometown

The Things You Treasure

Things You Miss From Your Hometown

I am halfway through my first semester of college and I have realized that there are many things that I miss at home. Whether it's your friends, or your dog, they are things that matter most to you even if they don't matter in the least to other people. Here are a few things that you may be missing from your hometown like I am:

1. My mother: I have gotten used to not being around my mother, but she continues to miss me and calls me every day if not every other day.

2. My dog: I miss him more than he misses me. When I talk to my mother, I always talk to him on the phone, even though he can't talk back to me.

3. My bed: Even though I brought my mattress, I still miss the comfort of my bed as it sits in my own room.

4. My middle/high school teachers: They were a lot more personal and I could always go into their classrooms for quiet time.

5. My local news: Watching the news at my school is not the same because I don't know the streets and places where things happen.

6. My neighbors: Though living in a dorm is nice and I'm friends with a few of my neighbors, I miss many people from my neighborhood back home. Though they were adults, they could help me with certain things that my hall mates may not necessarily be able to assist me with.

7. The local places: Being at Sweet Briar, it takes a while to get to places and I'm very lazy, but it helps me hang on longer to my money (except on Amazon).

8. My doctors: Though the health and wellness at my school is available, I hate having to start all over with my medical history, which is quite annoying.

9. My friends: I have a lot of memories with my friends back home and I can lean on them when I am having a mental breakdown. The comfort of an established friendship is meaningful and starting that process of building relationships is scary sometimes.

10. Knowing the cable channels: I have struggled to remember the cable channels on the TV in the common area. When I go back home, it is nice to be able to go straight to the channel I want to watch.

When you go back home, treasure the little things you miss in college because soon you'll be back in your dorm wanting those things at your fingertips.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
