Freshmen year of college can be scary; it’s a new place with people you do not know. Here are some things that might help you out with your first year of college. The rest is up to you, and just remember to try and enjoy every second of it.
You’re going to spend all your money on food- If you are in high school and you think you spend a lot of money on food now, just wait until college. The late night munchies will put a dent in your wallet.
Classes seem hard but it gets better- Freshmen year, all of your 101 classes will seem really hard. Easier classes have more homework and busy work. Seriously, enjoy it. Homework and busy work are better than midterms and finals that count for 75 percent of your grade.
Take advantage of studying abroad- Studying abroad is the perfect opportunity to explore the world without your parents arguing with you. You get credit for school and you get to travel and have fun in a foreign country. What’s better than that?
You will find your people- You’re going to feel lonely especially if you are going to a college without knowing anyone at all. Just be patient and wait a week or two, you will find your people.
You will learn who your real high school friends are- You are going to lose some of your high school friends in college, and it’s unfortunate but it’s the truth. Wait until you go home for spring break or the summer. The high school friends that you still hit up by the end of sophomore year are the keepers.
You will miss your mom’s cooking- If you hate eating at home now and crave to go to Chipotle all the time, you’ll regret it. You can get Chipotle and junk food all the time in college, but a nice home cooked meal is not that easy to find.
There are a lot of fu** boys and fu** girls- Especially freshmen and sophomore year, make sure you have your fu** boy radar out and ready. Try not to fall too hard for someone who cares very little about it. You deserve better.
You’re going to spend your weekend in bed and watching Netflix- If you think you are going to be productive on weekends, you are wrong. Instead of going hiking and going on adventures, you will probably stay in your bed from noon to 6 p.m. watching "Breaking Bad" or "Greys Anatomy." No shame.
You will procrastinate – It is so easy to procrastinate in college since you don’t have your mom there nagging you about getting to class. Go to class. You’re going to regret it when you are .5% from passing the class and you have 5/10 points in attendance.
You will fail your first midterm- Just accept it. You might have aced every single test in high school but the reality is, you will probably fail your first college midterm. There is no shame in this because college is hard; give yourself a break.
Your GPA your first semester of freshmen year is going to be crappy- Once again, just accept it. College is not easy but you will get used to it. Step your game up your second semester and go after your dream GPA.
Online shopping is going to be your best friend- College makes you lazy. Shopping in bed and having clothes delivered right to your door is going to sound so much better than shopping at a store, even if shopping was your cardio in high school.
Sororities and fraternities are not like the movies- Don’t trust everything that you see on TV. All the ridiculous hazing and preppy girl lifestyle is not what you will find in the Greek system. You just have to go check it out and see for yourself for this one.
You will be homesick (for a little)- The first couple of weeks are going to be hard. You will feel the urge to want to go home all the time. Just wait a semester and that feeling will soon disappear and you will never want to go home.
