11 Things You'll Only Understand If You're The Oldest Child

I am the oldest child in my family. I have a younger sister, who is five years younger, and a younger brother, who is ten years younger. The huge age gaps have proven one thing: I am most definitely the eldest child in the family.

Yes, I am the definition of the stereotypical older sister. I sometimes feel like the second mom, and definitely, make sure my brother and sister know it. Here are 11 signs you're the oldest sibling.

1. You're the designated babysitter.

Yep, I'm the babysitter for the family. Countless times my parents have relied on me to take charge and "watch the kids" for them.

2. Your parents are the youngest of your friend's parents.

A lot of my friends have parents who are way older than mine. My parents are pretty young compared to most of the parents, and they love it.

3. Your siblings get away with everything.

My younger siblings get away with so many things I would never have dreamed doing their age. This is definitely one of the cons of being the oldest.

4. You are protective in regards to your younger siblings.

I will always stick up for my siblings, no matter what. Why? I'm the only one who's allowed to pick on them, that's why.

5. "Is that your son?"

Anytime I am with my brother in public by ourselves, I get odd looks. This past Mother's Day, I picked up food for my family with my brother. As we got our food, the server exclaimed, "Happy Mother's Day to you!" No, my 8-year-old brother is not my child, I am 19.

6. Watching your sister wear all of your clothes.

My sister gets almost all of my clothes that I can no longer fit into. You're welcome, Avery.

7. Knowing your bedtime was way earlier when you were a kid.

I definitely went to bed at a way earlier time than my brother does. However, I am glad that I learned at a young age that sleep is important.

8. Being independent.

I did not have a sister until I was 5. This led to a lot of playing by myself, and ultimately why I am a more independent person today. I love being on my own every now and then.

9. Being the leader of the pack.

I lead the pack. Simple as that.

10. Listening to your siblings complain...

...about everything you get to do. My sister growing up definitely thought we were the same age and she could do everything that I could do.

11. Knowing you are a role model.

At the end of the day, I love being the oldest. This leads to a lot of responsibility in how I act, because I know I have two people watching my every move. I have learned that my bad habits may cause them to have the same bad habits and that I need to be the best role model they could ever expect. Now in college, this is harder to do.

I try my best to talk to them as much as possible, even though there are times when they reach out and I'm not able to talk. However, I try my best to be a role model from afar, and to be the best big sister ever.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
