Things You Only Understand If You Grew Up On The Eastern Shore

I have lived on the Eastern Shore of Maryland my whole life. I mean who doesn't love crabs, fishing, and boating. I know I sure do!

1. Wait where are you from?

Oh, that place you pass when you drive to the beach? Yeah, that's it! Every time I tell someone from out-of-state or even some in-state that I'm from the Eastern Shore, I either get the few that are familiar and love it or the majority who look at me like I have three heads.

2. Dad, I'm not catching anything!

There's no better place to catch your crabs or fish. Long hours of sitting and waiting are always better when you got your family and friends. Make sure you don't drop that net in the water!

3. I really wanna go boating today

Fishing, tubing, crabbing, or just jumping off the boat and swimming, the Chesapeake Bay has it all! There are so many little creeks you can go into and catch some huge Rockfish. I know what we're having for dinner!

4. Can we have some crabs and corn for dinner?

There's no better combination. The Eastern Shore arguably has the best crabs and corn, but I might be a little biased.

5. Wait so you don't have a mall?

No, we don't have a mall, but Annapolis isn't too far away! We do a lot of other activities. I think I like it better this way.

6. Hey did you wanna go play in the neighborhood?

I have never felt safer than when I am at home. Every day in the summer my best friend and I would play all day in our neighborhood. I know many kids can't play in their neighborhoods because it could be too dangerous but that wasn't the case for us!

7. I saw some ducks, swans, and geese today!

In the fall and winter, you will hear those geese early in the morning until sunset. There will always be some mallard ducks swimming and walking around in the summer. Not gonna toot my own horn but we even raised some little ducks of our own! Gotta love all the wildlife on the ole shore.

8. So which waterfront restaurant should we go to?

There are so many fun seafood restaurants that are waterfront. It's the best place to eat all your seafood desires.

9. The sunsets! OH, MY GOODNESS!

You will see some amazing sunsets! Whether it be from a field or on the water, you will always have the perfect view. I think I have about a thousand pictures of sunsets on my phone and DSLR, but hey they just never get old. (The above photo was taken by yours truly)

10. Finally, the people you meet!

You will meet the most amazing people. I don't know what I would do without my best friend that lives less than 2 minutes away from me. I couldn't have had anyone better to grow up with.

The majority of folks here will act like they have known you for so many years even when you have only known them for 10 minutes. There is for sure a wide range of people but you will never feel more at home.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
