As an incoming freshman, I can say with absolute honesty that I haven't been this emotional in a long time. I understand that most goodbyes are only temporary, but the feeling of leaving your childhood home is very heart wrenching. I've grown up in my small town and made many memories with those who I surrounded myself with here. But when the time comes to say goodbye to my friends and family, I will know that I'm making a great decision to go to college.
As you leave for school make sure to remember these things:
1. Remember to pack your nostalgia.
From my personal experience, its a pretty big deal to pack your childhood teddy bear or blankie. When you were a child, you carried around your favorite item for safety. By bringing it to school with you, it will provide extra support in your times of need.
2. Remember to get enough sleep.
The last few days at home before you leave for college can be very exciting. You will have a million things running through your brain. Try doing a few things to relax before bed such as a nice hot shower, or bath. The more rested you are, the better you will feel which will help with the final goodbyes when the time comes.
3. Remember to thank your parents.
Understand that college is not just a big stepping stone for you, but also your parents. They have helped you through 12 years of school to get you to this point. They are exhausted, but so proud of their baby go move on to bigger and better things. Remember to thank them for everything they have done for you. I promise they will appreciate it.
4. Remember college is to further your education.
I know you've heard this a million times from people, but don't forget that the ultimate goal of college is to further your education! Many jobs today require degrees in order to even put in an application for the position. Remember to study and work hard.
5. Remember you're going to have fun too.
But.. Don't forget to have fun! You will meet so many people who feel the same way you do. College is bigger than your high school, and has all new people to create memories with. Step outside of your comfort zone and have a blast!
6. Remember its okay to go far.
Just because you are moving far away from your family doesn't mean you'll never see them again. Unless of course, you're leaving to get away and start new. In this case, be free and live the life the way you want to. You are your own person.
7. Remember it's okay to stay close.
Even if you're only going a few minutes away, you are still taking the steps to become a mature adult! You're far away enough from home to gain your independence, but close enough to where you need a hug or your laundry done, you are just a few minutes away.
8. Remember you are doing this for yourself.
Don't forget that you are the one that will make the final decisions that impact your future. You can choose to skip class or to stay out late the night before the test, but remember the lasting effects that are caused by your decisions.
9. Remember to keep in touch with everyone back home.
While you're at school, things could drastically change back home. Your boyfriend could be bored out of his mind or your mom started a new hobby. Make sure that you take the time out of your day to contact the ones you love back home. It will make their day and put you in a better mood (hopefully).
10. Remember to stand up for what you want.
As you start your first few days at school, you will be faced with many obstacles. If you are uncomfortable with ANYTHING, do not do it. Stand up for yourself and make a point. You should be happy with everything you do.
11. Remember that everything will be okay.
You may be scared now, but in a few days it will all be over. They crying, the late night phone calls, the sleepless nights, all of it. You will get comfortable with your surroundings, meet new friends, and enjoy your time at school.
