11 Tips for High School Seniors

As the holidays draw nearer, more and more high school seniors are ending their college application process. Some of them are even getting acceptance letters back, much like I received my acceptance letter for Temple just a little over a year ago!

Being a senior in high school brings a lot of new things into your realm of existence. You have to start looking for your freshman year roommate, say goodbye to friends, and be the most responsible class in your school. This could be a lot for teens to understand, since you're just on the cusp of independence and adulthood.

The following things in this article are things I recommend every high schooler to consider, since these tips are things I have done to make ever-lasting memories and start life anew.

1. Get involved in activities you've never done before, but always wanted to do.

High school's a time to experiment with things and see which path of interests are right for you. If you always wanted to be in student government, or wanted to paint a mural with the art department, DO IT!!!

2. Drive around with friends, and make a kick-ass playlist!

Being a senior means that you're finally able to drive yourself to school. Some of my fondest memories of high school were driving around after school and blasting some great tunes with a full car. Try it out the next time it's a nice day, and soak up some of that fresh air you never get inside the dreary place you call school.

3. High school parties are one in a million.

When I say one in a million, this can be taken positively or negatively. If you like standing around with the same people in somebody's backyard, go for it. However, keep in mind that college is very different from the parties we've come to know and love. You don't have to "party" to have fun, and college will be a place to try out more fulfilling activities like shopping, going to movies, etc.

4. Give your family members some hugs. They're gonna miss you!

Your mom is probably already starting to tear up as you fill out your Common App. Just remember this: your parents have seen you grow up since birth, and they're beyond proud of all of your accomplishments. Try and show 'em a little love once in a while, and help your younger siblings adjust to "ruling the roost" once you're at school.

5. YOU WILL CHOOSE THE RIGHT COLLEGE!!!!!!!

This is something that every high school senior can relate to. If you didn't get into your "dream school", it's not the end of the world. College is what you make of it, and as long as you feel happy and can excel at your choice of school, then that's all that matters.

Some of you may also think, "Well, everybody's going to [insert college here], so maybe that's the best choice for me.". College is a personal decision, so don't fall into the trap of following the rest of your classmates to the same school!!!

6. Don't freak out if you aren't as close with some of your friends. You guys are growing up!

High school friends are quite unique to other people you are going to befriend throughout adulthood. You've been with these kids since you were young, and it's exciting to grow up with one another amidst the struggles of teen angst.

Some friends are finding themselves in different ways, which means they're probabl maturing for a new part of their life. You guys may not have the same interests anymore, or simply just don't make an effort to hang out. Just remember that they're not trying to leave you, but are just evolving as people. You'll have many more friends to come, and those that stick around are with you for life.

7. Keep in contact with your favorite teachers.

Your teachers really shape your academic motivation, and in my case, help you find out your true passions. These people bring infinite wisdom, and seeing them again during your fall and winter break will really brighten up your days.

8. "Being popular" doesn't exist.

Throughout a typical high school career, popularity is envied, and even put upon a pedestal. As you reach the end of the year, you'll start to notice social barriers coming down amongst your fellow classmates. Insecurities aren't cool, so hang out with whomever your heart desires. College is nowhere near high school, so get some practice expressing your true self and finding the friends you'd like to surround yourself with.

9. Go to prom, because it's never going to happen again.

I'm just as anti-prom as the next person, but I have to say, your prom experience will always be something that resonates with you. You'll see some of your classmates in a whole new light, as everyone seems to come together for just that day to relax and celebrate.

Remember that you'll look amazing, too!

10. Mentally prepare yourself to start having work to do in a few months.

Senioritis is insanely real. We get that.

I'm Shmacked and the photos your older friends post on Facebook do not do college any justice. It's definitely a ton of fun, but remember that you're about to spend thousands of dollars to get an education. You won't necessarily be drowning in work, but you definitely need to be responsible enough to manage your time efficiently so you're not studying until 4 in the morning every night, or flunk your English Gen Ed.

Crack open a book and pull back the cobwebs, kids!

11. College will be the time of your life.

It's nerve-racking to think that your whole life is about to change. College is a change for the better, and it's unbelievable to finally feel that independence you've always wanted. Remember that there's no such thing as a popularity contest, and you can truly be whatever you'd like to be at your new school.

Welcome to a new beginning.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
