Ahh, Netflix ... Who doesn't love snuggling up on the couch with some delicious snacks while binge-watching endless episodes? It's definitely a blessing and a curse. Sometimes we get so wrapped up in a series that we waste precious days and weeks of our summer months. I'll let you in on a secret; there's a big world out there that doesn't revolve around "Orange Is The New Black," so don't let Netflix consume your entire summer.
Here are some fun ideas you can try instead of staring at a screen all day.
1. Go to an amusement park.
I know that "Grey's Anatomy" can really get your heart pumping, but nothing will give you a thrill like a crazy roller coaster! Grab your friends and head to an amusement park for the day. If you're from the Northeast, most amusement parks are seasonal, so you have to take advantage of them while they are open in the summer!
2. Read.
Thrills aren't your thing? Well, there are more ways to relax than watching Netflix. For me, nothing is more relaxing than reading a good book in my bedroom, or, more ideally, on the beach. When I read, I am able to get more involved with the characters and plot than I would while simply watching TV. There are books written on any subject for any audience, so find one that interests you, and start turning pages!
3. Road trip.
The idea of a road trip may sound intimidating to a lot of people, but it doesn't have to be a big commitment (unless you want it to be!). Chances are, you have experienced most of the attractions your town has to offer, so go explore other places! Even if you only venture to the next town over, every destination has something unique to offer.
4. Scavenger hunt.
One way to explore new and old places is a scavenger hunt! Make a few teams, create a list of funny tasks and see where the hunt takes you. Can't think of ideas? There are plenty of websites and apps that generate crazy challenges!
5. Workout.
You have been telling yourself that you are going to get in shape "tomorrow" for the past three months. ... Use the time you have away from school to create new healthy habits. Drag your friends along for motivation!
6. Play a sport.
Speaking of healthy habits, unleash your competitive side! Gather some friends, a ball and play a pick up game of any sport you can think of!
7. Go to a city.
Tired of your boring old town? If you live close enough to a big city, take a day trip! Cities offer unique attractions and a mix of different cultures unlike anything you'll find in small town USA. You'll feel like you went on a crazy vacation in one short day. Plus, there's always a chance you will run into a celebrity. Gasp!
8. Hike.
Maybe you like woods better than the concrete jungle. If so, go for a hike! You can watch nature documentaries all you want, but you can't really experience nature until you get out there yourself. Find a state park, put on some boots and get wild!
9. Go to the beach or pool.
Nobody wants to look like they have just emerged from a dark a cave at the end of the summer, so take advantage of the warm months where it counts: outside. Nothing says "summer vacation" like sitting on the warm sand with the crash of ocean waves in the background or dipping your toes into a refreshing pool. Take advantage of pools, beaches and bathing suits before the weather drops to ungodly temperatures.
10. Barbecue.
Good friends, warm weather, cold drinks, delicious food. Need I say more?
Go out and make summer memories while you can because you don't want to look back on summer 2015 and regret your inactivity. Save Netflix for when you're procrastinating that huge term paper you have to write.
