6 Things To Do Over Winter Break

How to spend that precious time between semesters.

6 Things To Do Over Winter Break

So, you have finished your first semester and have approximately a month of free time. What should you do with it? You could be productive and start getting ready for the next semester or even do an internship if you must, but here are some other, more relaxing things, you could be doing.

1. Read a Book (For Fun)

[rebelmouse-proxy-image https://media.rbl.ms/image?u=%2Ffiles%2F2017%2F01%2F14%2F636199528325851419-1949533087_source.gif&ho=https%3A%2F%2Faz616578.vo.msecnd.net&s=334&h=2fa1e4a8c4d6e8fcb559cbef95a581c2e675074f11389071f844568633adf816&size=980x&c=2865535110 crop_info="%7B%22image%22%3A%20%22https%3A//media.rbl.ms/image%3Fu%3D%252Ffiles%252F2017%252F01%252F14%252F636199528325851419-1949533087_source.gif%26ho%3Dhttps%253A%252F%252Faz616578.vo.msecnd.net%26s%3D334%26h%3D2fa1e4a8c4d6e8fcb559cbef95a581c2e675074f11389071f844568633adf816%26size%3D980x%26c%3D2865535110%22%7D" expand=1]

I don't know about you, but I find it extremely hard to read anything other than the required texts during college.I get tired of reading and don't have any energy to read for pleasure, which is sad. Take this time to either read one of those books that have been sitting on your shelf for years or finding a new book to read. It doesn't even have to be a long book. Maybe try some poetry or short stories if you don't have the time for a full-length novel.

2. Reconnect with Friends

[rebelmouse-proxy-image https://media.rbl.ms/image?u=%2Ffiles%2F2017%2F01%2F14%2F636199529610452111-1114946554_giphy.gif&ho=https%3A%2F%2Faz616578.vo.msecnd.net&s=692&h=3751fa2419056dea489bf8d2196726f124244e37069545f13247b266bc45ade1&size=980x&c=1370853808 crop_info="%7B%22image%22%3A%20%22https%3A//media.rbl.ms/image%3Fu%3D%252Ffiles%252F2017%252F01%252F14%252F636199529610452111-1114946554_giphy.gif%26ho%3Dhttps%253A%252F%252Faz616578.vo.msecnd.net%26s%3D692%26h%3D3751fa2419056dea489bf8d2196726f124244e37069545f13247b266bc45ade1%26size%3D980x%26c%3D1370853808%22%7D" expand=1]

If you are like me and don't see your old friends that often since you started college this is usually a good time to make plans as you are most likely all in the same area for the first time in a while! Maybe you can go out for a meal, or watch a movie, or get together and play board games, or go to a party if that is your scene.

3. Spend time with Family[rebelmouse-proxy-image https://media.rbl.ms/image?u=%2Ffiles%2F2017%2F01%2F14%2F636199530957555731-1855710066_giphy%2520%281%29.gif&ho=https%3A%2F%2Faz616578.vo.msecnd.net&s=281&h=7e5ba15eeb0c784d4dbd01f770c2bc24b656eebb23ed97ab4c44b427a8401935&size=980x&c=494375908 crop_info="%7B%22image%22%3A%20%22https%3A//media.rbl.ms/image%3Fu%3D%252Ffiles%252F2017%252F01%252F14%252F636199530957555731-1855710066_giphy%252520%25281%2529.gif%26ho%3Dhttps%253A%252F%252Faz616578.vo.msecnd.net%26s%3D281%26h%3D7e5ba15eeb0c784d4dbd01f770c2bc24b656eebb23ed97ab4c44b427a8401935%26size%3D980x%26c%3D494375908%22%7D" expand=1]

This is usually a given since winter break coincides with Christmas, but if you have the opportunity, you definitely should spend some quality time with your family, whoever that may be. You've probably spent enough time away from them to miss them as well, and hopefully, you don't start arguing at least until the end of winter break.

4.Enjoy some Winter Time Activities

[rebelmouse-proxy-image https://media.rbl.ms/image?u=%2Ffiles%2F2017%2F01%2F14%2F6361995318527631961995391204_giphy%2520%282%29.gif&ho=https%3A%2F%2Faz616578.vo.msecnd.net&s=805&h=a57c954df73b21a8a116eba48edc5fa03452367f9a35c386e96aaa66259d7635&size=980x&c=1812052733 crop_info="%7B%22image%22%3A%20%22https%3A//media.rbl.ms/image%3Fu%3D%252Ffiles%252F2017%252F01%252F14%252F6361995318527631961995391204_giphy%252520%25282%2529.gif%26ho%3Dhttps%253A%252F%252Faz616578.vo.msecnd.net%26s%3D805%26h%3Da57c954df73b21a8a116eba48edc5fa03452367f9a35c386e96aaa66259d7635%26size%3D980x%26c%3D1812052733%22%7D" expand=1]

Now is the time to enjoy some things you can only do in winter, at least in cold areas. These include things like ice skating, sledding, snowman building and snowball fights. Hopefully, there will be enough snow at least one of the days of winter break for you to accomplish some of these activities. I've always enjoyed ice skating so I will vouch for that one and there are quite a few ice rinks in our area if anyone is interested.

5. Pursue a Hobby

[rebelmouse-proxy-image https://media.rbl.ms/image?u=%2Ffiles%2F2017%2F01%2F14%2F636199532167299400-497682656_giphy%2520%283%29.gif&ho=https%3A%2F%2Faz616578.vo.msecnd.net&s=199&h=b09615157a7a0a26009e26ba97eef7827f67ee09405d93786b233d2e2bc4b75b&size=980x&c=576588330 crop_info="%7B%22image%22%3A%20%22https%3A//media.rbl.ms/image%3Fu%3D%252Ffiles%252F2017%252F01%252F14%252F636199532167299400-497682656_giphy%252520%25283%2529.gif%26ho%3Dhttps%253A%252F%252Faz616578.vo.msecnd.net%26s%3D199%26h%3Db09615157a7a0a26009e26ba97eef7827f67ee09405d93786b233d2e2bc4b75b%26size%3D980x%26c%3D576588330%22%7D" expand=1]

Maybe you have a hobby like drawing, knitting, or anything else you can think of that got pushed to the side during the fall semester. Take this time to get back into it. Maybe make a few things or just enjoy yourself. It's a great way to relax and unwind after a long, tiring semester.

6.Netflix Binge[rebelmouse-proxy-image https://media.rbl.ms/image?u=%2Ffiles%2F2017%2F01%2F14%2F636199533102416890-1088030526_giphy%2520%284%29.gif&ho=https%3A%2F%2Faz616578.vo.msecnd.net&s=3&h=358ed26d60d50aadb82e31515e525c6ce8ba7ec7686154b5d43ffc6a5686235d&size=980x&c=3761679787 crop_info="%7B%22image%22%3A%20%22https%3A//media.rbl.ms/image%3Fu%3D%252Ffiles%252F2017%252F01%252F14%252F636199533102416890-1088030526_giphy%252520%25284%2529.gif%26ho%3Dhttps%253A%252F%252Faz616578.vo.msecnd.net%26s%3D3%26h%3D358ed26d60d50aadb82e31515e525c6ce8ba7ec7686154b5d43ffc6a5686235d%26size%3D980x%26c%3D3761679787%22%7D" expand=1]

Last but not least, what I assume is most people's favorite, the Netflix binge. Get caught up on that t.v show you've fallen behind on or even start a new one. Watch a billion terrible comedies to make you laugh or watch a sad drama where a dog dies if you need to cry a bit. Either way get comfortable in your bed, make a snack stockpile and you are ready to go!

What If The U.N. Actually United The Nations?

This is me taking a break from being cynical and imagining how the world could be one day.

By now, people are probably sick of hearing me talk about myself, so I’m changing it up this week. In keeping with the subject of my J-Term class, I’m asking myself a political what-if question. What if we could create a sovereign global government firmly grounded in justice that could actually adjudicate Earth’s many disparate nation-states into one unified world government?

The Basics Of The United Nations

As the General Assembly convenes, here is the United Nations 101

For an organization that literally unites the nations, it amazes me how little is taught about the United Nations in schools, or at least where I went to school. It wasn't until I went to college and got a higher education that I learned the basics of the United Nations. I believe that every American should know at least the basics of what the United Nations does, especially since our country is one of the 5 permanent members. So here are the main "organs" of the United Nations.
