No matter where you go this summer you will most likely find attractions and excitement left and right. Living in Westchester, New York, you may not have a tropical escape within driving distance, but you have so much more.
When people think of New York they undoubtedly think of Manhattan, but us Westchester residents know there is so much more to our home state. Here are a few fun, easy and relatively local must-dos in and around Westchester for this summer.
On Sunny Days:
1. Jones Beach
Whether you're going for the day or a concert at the Nikon Theater, you're sure to have a good time at this not-so-far away beach. With several fields and concession stands, there's no better way to spend a day.
2. Central Park
Aside from the many events held here each day, this park is the equivalent of an adult playground. There is always something new to discover here, and for many people in Westchester it is only a train ride away.
3. Splash Down Beach Waterpark
Anyone can go to a pool, but not everyone lives near an adventure-based waterpark. Featuring attractions like the Wave pool and the Bullet Bowl, there's a pool, ride or slide for everyone in the family.
4. Playland
Playland was a staple in every Westchester kid's childhood. If you haven't waited in line for the Dragon Coaster at least once in your life, why do you even live here?
5. Bear Mountain
Many people may only know this name from the parkway, but for those with an adventurous side this is the absolute best spot to go hiking on a beautiful summer day.
6. Bronx River Bicycle Sundays
While you can always bike on one of Westchester's many bike paths any day of the week, you can join fellow bikers on select Sunday mornings from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. to ride from Westchester County Center in White Plains to Scarsdale Road in Yonkers.
7. Ridge Hill
After opening in late 2011, Ridge Hill has become a staple in Westchester shopping and recreation. In one day you can wake up in your apartment, grab your Starbucks coffee, go to the doctor, shop, hit the gym, get lunch, see a movie, go to a comedy show, get dinner and dessert, and much more all without leaving this one place. How can you go wrong?
On Rainy Days:
1. Broadway Shows
Another train ride away, Westchester is the neighbor of one of the largest entertainment franchises in the world. Whether you head to the city for a matinée or see an evening show you can never go wrong with Broadway.
2. Local Museums
Young or old, art lover or science lover, rain or shine, there is a museum just around the corner that you will love. Without even leaving Westchester, you can see fresh, new exhibits or interesting historical facts and features.
3. iFLY
A recent addition to Ridge Hill, you can now simulate skydiving right near home. With barely any age, height or weight restrictions, this is a thrilling attraction for nearly anyone.
4. New Roc City
New Roc City is a kid- and adult-friendly spot with a multitude of things to do. You'll have the choice of bowling, billiards, mini golf, an arcade, or the movies.
5. Bowlmor Bowling
Yes, this is just a bowling alley, but Justin Bieber went there once so...
6. Palisades Center
A classic stop for shopping and fun, the Palisades is one of the most diverse and affordable stops in Westchester. What may seem like just a mall is becoming much more with additions of restaurants, a movie theater and an indoor speedway. There's no going wrong with the Palisades.
7. Empire City Casino
This may not be a kid-friendly place, but it can be a ton of fun for the adults in the family. Watch a race at the raceway and play a few rounds on the slot machines.
When You're Hungry:
1. Walter's
A hidden gem, Walter's has been serving their infamous hot dogs roadside in Mamaroneck since 1928. Pick one up with a delicious milkshake for a perfect summer lunch.
2. Candlelight
This place is heaven on earth. Nothing is more satisfying than Candlelight wings. Nothing. Celebrities such as Scott Disick and Jonathan Cheban have been known to come from who-know-where to Yonkers solely for these little bits of heaven.
3. Dunwoodie Pizzeria
Another hometown staple, Dunwoodie is known as one of the best family-owned pizzerias in Westchester and has an even better reputation for its food. If you want good New York pizza, you want Dunwoodie's pizza.
4. Stew Leonard's and Costco
Not only are these places great for grocery shopping, but they are also known for their generous assortments of free samples. Conveniently located next to each other, they both offer a variety of groceries, fresh food and basically anything else you could possibly think of.
5. Absolute Bagels
According to Timeout.com this is where you can obtain the best bagels in New York. While any bagel in Westchester could make your heart flutter, a summer morning spent venturing to the Upper West Side for a bagel is a summer morning well spent.
6. Xaviers X20
For the classier, warm summer evenings, Xaviers X20 is literally the perfect option. Enjoy the absolutely gorgeous view of the Hudson River with your award-winning meal.
7. Anna Artuso's
Nothing compares to the fresh cakes, pastries and cookies from McLean Ave. These sweet treats are perfect for any occasion.
After Dark:
1. Mamaroneck Ave.
For the over 21 crowd this is the perfect road to wander around and party on. With an assortment of bars, clubs and restaurants, you can let loose and have some fun close to home.
2. Free Concerts
These can be found all over the place. Cross County, Playland and Central Park are all known to have either free or nearly free shows all summer.
3. Fireworks Shows
Once the Fourth of July rolls around these will be just about everywhere. Keep your eye out for some patriotic events this summer.
4. Alamo Drafthouse
Enjoy an evening at this classy local cinema along with a meal, a snack or simply an ice cold beer. The Alamo makes a night at the movies just a bit more exciting than usual and can turn any normal night into a great one.
5. Sky Zone
After the routine dinner is over and you have nothing left to do, bounce your way to Sky Zone trampoline park. What's more fun than a room literally made of trampolines? Nothing. That's what.
6. Hudson River Waterfront Walkway
Whether you're looking for a romantic evening with a special someone or a photo op with your friends, the walkways all over Westchester overlooking the Hudson River are your absolute best options.
7. Paint and Wine Bars
These may not be exclusive to Westchester, but I could not care less. These trending paint bars are a fabulous way to spend a summer evening with friends, family or a date. Paint your troubles away, and if that doesn't work, well that's what the wine is for.
