Things to Do During Welcome Week (Besides Drink)

Parties are not all that, there is so much to get involved in around your campus!

Things to Do During Welcome Week (Besides Drink)

This week I started my freshman year at Indiana University. I have found that while there are many opportunities and invitations to party during the first week of college, the University itself offers a great deal of activities to partake in for those who are not looking to drink or party.

For example, I partook in a program through my school where I moved in a couple of days early and went on a backpacking trip with twelve other students. Not only was it a way to introduce myself to a more independent lifestyle, but it also helped me to make new friends that shared an interest in the outdoors, just like me.

There have been several events at all times of the day for all different kinds of people and interests. Today I went to an event called Sex, Drugs, and Rock ‘n Roll. It was all about sex education, education and resources regarding sexual assault and information on drugs and alcohol. I learned a lot of things I did not already know and also pledged to partake in safe events across campus. It was a very cool opportunity to meet new people and find out how I may be able to get involved across campus.

Another thing to do during Welcome Week is to walk your class schedule. Even though I have visited my campus multiple times in the past, I still find myself getting lost across campus. It is really comforting to be able to know where you are going your first day of class. It also does not hurt to get your textbooks before class starts because you can always return the ones you do not need for a full refund before the end of the first week.

Chilling in your dorm room is not a bad option, either. I sit in my dorm and write and listen to music and keep the door open so that other people on my floor can stop by and hangout and talk. It is a really good way to make friends that live near you and constantly have people to talk to.

Join a club or a sport! I started practicing with the rugby team at my school (and quickly figured out how out of shape I am) but it does give me something else to be involved in and stay in shape! I really enjoy being a part of a team and so it is a good way to get involved and also motivate yourself to stay out of trouble and be accountable.

There are so many things to do around campus that do not involve getting drunk and partying, so go out there and find something smart to do!

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
