6 Things My Little Brother Taught Me

Although he might be annoying, my little brother is one of the most amazing people I know.

On the Fourth of July, 13 years ago, my baby brother was born. When I was only seven-years-old, a boy, who not only became an unexpected and fantastic teacher but also an incredible person whose optimistic attitude I genuinely admire, came home.

By being nothing other than his extraordinary self, my not-so little brother taught me valuable life lessons.

1. Never abandon your inner child.

We grow up so quickly, so eagerly. But my brother, he strives to show the importance of embracing the kid within. Whether it's with simple, odd and often hilarious 12-year-old boy humor, or pretend games and imaginary adventures, he is a reminder of the power and magic that child-like joy and imagination can have.

2. Always allow yourself to be amazed.

No matter where we go or what we see, my brother sincerely appreciates and enjoys it. He not only looks around him, but he fully immerses himself in his surroundings, constantly wowing, and expressing the wonderful reality of what we take for granted.

3. Friendship comes in all ages.

My brother can become best friends with the 93-year-old widow across the street and spend countless of hours playing alongside a pair of three-year-olds. He serves as proof that everyone, no matter their age, is worthy of your time and friendship.

4. Try it all.

He will try anything that may (or may not) sound exciting. Not once will he say "No." to something without at least giving it a try. He is never afraid, ashamed or uninterested as daily he embarks upon little adventures. His willing attitude is rare and well-desired, one that I aspire to have.

5. Dream big.

Impossible is also not a part of his vocabulary. He has dreams that he really believes he can accomplish. His dreams are never mediocre or easy. He is not one to settle. He dreams of studying engineering at MIT, playing a lead role on Broadway, or teaching 11th grade physics while directing the high school play and musical, all while being an involved dad of many and a dedicated husband. And because he thinks he can do it all, he just might.

6. Never give up.

He might never be the best soccer player on his team, or get straight A's all throughout high school. Yet, he will practice non-stop until he can score a goal, or study for hours on end until he gets the kind of test score worthy of the fridge. He won't give up too easily.

My little charismatic brother, being barely 13-years-old and just under five feet tall, is wiser, and far more interesting than many.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
