Things That Happen When You Come From A Big Family

"How are we related to them?"

Things That Happen When You Come From A Big Family
Wendy Heavrin

I attended a family reunion this past weekend with about 100 people who I am in some way or another related to. But before we go any further, the most important part is that the name of this family reunion was called “The Heavrin Hillbilly Hootenanny”. And if that doesn’t explain the whole weekend in itself then the following will. Here’s many of the thoughts that I had throughout the weekend where I had no cell phone service, no shower, and plenty of Red's Apple Ale.

How are we related?

Who is that guy in the red shirt?

He’s my cousin?

Whose child is that?

“Hi, this is my granddaughter Emily,” “I’m Erin, grandma.”

Those people over there..who are they?

How are we related to them?

*My boyfriend whispers to me* “I know I just met 10 different people, but I already forgot everyone's name.”

Who is Great Aunt Pat? I don’t remember...

Are they really family or did they marry into the family?

How are we cousins again?

Ohhh….Bill is related to Jane! I think I get it know.

I have literally never heard of this person before in my life, but hello, we’re second cousins.

Orange Family Unit Unite!! These are the only people’s name I could tell you with confidence.

Yes, those are Kazoo's, and yes we regret the decision to hand them out to all the children/adults.

Which person is related to papa again?

*whispers to my cousin* “Who is that guy over there with the beard?”

No one has any idea who that guy with the beard is. Not even grandma and she knows everyone here!

Hi, I’m Connie. Do you remember me? (I said yes to be nice but I actually have no idea)

Whose baby is that?

Why are there so many Eric’s here!

And Wendy’s. I literally can’t keep anyone straight.

Where is my mom? “MOM!” Literally half of the campground just turned and looked at me.

Is anyone in charge of the children wrestling in the dirt?

It’s fine they’re like 5th cousins.

Food is ready! You better be first in line if you want some!

I have literally met a new person every single hour.

“Hi, I’m Erin. I go to Catherine. Hicks. Heavrin. Janet's daughter?” Yes, Erin, not Emily.”

Do all 27 of these campers belong to us?

I don’t understand how you can be related to this many people.

Right when I figure out someone's name they go change clothes and then we are back at square one.

If everyone could stay in the same outfit all weekend then I think I could remember who everyone was.

Not only is this called a Hillbilly Hootenanny, we also are having a hillbilly costume contest.

There are approximately 20 different cameras that I am looking at for this picture right now.

So in conclusion, the Heavrin family reunion was a blast, where I met a ton of new people every day that I am somehow related to. And I am looking forward to meeting everyone again in 5-10 years at the next family reunion!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
