When I tell someone that I am an English major I usually receive the same puzzled expression followed by the joke, “Wait that is a real major?” As well as other frustrating comments. My fellow English majors and I receive criticism on a daily basis for our choice in major. Here are a few things that all English majors are tired of hearing.
1. “Oh so you want to be a teacher”
The majority of English majors are in fact on the BSED track looking to become teachers; however, that is not the case for all of us. There are countless careers you can pursue with an English degree that are not in the field of education; however, most people are unaware of this and make the assumption that we all want to be teachers.
2. “That’s an actual major?”
Yes, in fact my major is real. Contrary to popular belief, English is a real major in college that requires just as much hard work and dedication as other majors.
3. “Are you silently judging my grammar?”
Yes, in fact I am. English majors have a natural tendency to judge the grammar of others. However, this does not mean we have perfect grammar. I find myself correcting my grammar on a daily basis.
4. “Will you write my paper for me?”
This is a HUGE pet peeve of mine. Just because I am an English major does not mean I want to write your papers for you. I have my own papers to write. I do not mind editing my friend’s papers for them; however, I refuse to do another person’s work for them.
5. “Aren’t you worried about finding a job?”
There are countless careers for those with an English degree post-graduation. For example, I would like to go into Journalism and possibly work for a newspaper or online news cite. People who are not English majors are simply uneducated on the countless career options we possess.
6. “Are your parents proud?”
Yes, my parents tell me on a daily basis that they are proud of me. I may not be pursuing a career in the health field like the rest of my family; however, I am creating a successful future for myself with an English degree. Because contrary to popular belief, it is possible.
