Ah, November. Thanksgiving break is right around the corner, the leaves have never been more beautiful, and the work load is piling up. It is like every November, professors decide they need about 18 more big grades before finals, leading to a lot of headaches for students everywhere.
If you are one of the thousands of college students pulling their hair out over due dates and multiple page study guides, here are six things to remember when it all becomes too much.
1. Put the books down.
There is such a thing as over-studying, so do not fall victim to it. You may be hyperventilating over that insane statistics test tomorrow, but if you have been studying for hours, what you need is a break. Hang out with some friends, go to bed early, watch Netflix -- just breathe. Over working yourself will only leave you exhausted and frazzled.
2. Get a lot of sleep.
While it may be tempting to stay up all night, it's actually terrible for you and you'll feel extremely foggy if you're running on little to no sleep. Running yourself down will just lead to bad performances on tests, plus you run the risk of getting sick and no one needs that during crunch time.
3. Don't procrastinate.
It's hard, but try to complete work within a day of it being assigned. If you don't, those pesky assignments will pile up, causing more and more stress.
4. Remember, grades are easily evened out.
Just because you do poorly on one test does not mean that your whole grade is shot. As long as you study and do your homework, you will pass.
5. Don't put too much pressure on yourself to be perfect.
An "A" equals above average work. That's hard to achieve, and in some classes, impossible. If you're doing your best then don't beat yourself up over a "B" or even a "C."
6. Don't self-medicate.
When the going gets tough, the tough should under no circumstances turn to mind altering substances for relief. While you may forget your worries temporarily, the hangover combined with the stress will make everything worse.
Just remember that you're not the only one buckling under the pressure of a stressful semester. Keep your head up and remember to breathe.
