People may laugh at how silly we say things, but hey, we are from “Joisey.”

It is no surprise that people from New Jersey have that typical “Jersey” accent, which can be spotted from a mile away. Our accents may stick out like a sore thumb, but we just can’t help but bring out our roots whenever possible. Here is how we say things back home on the east coast:

How to say water
People from Jersey will pronounce it, “Worter.”
People from any other state will pronounce it, “Wahter.”

How to say coffee
People from Jersey will pronounce it, “Cawfee.” 
People from any other state will pronounce it, “Cohfee.” 

How to say dog
People from Jersey will pronounce it, “Dawg.” 
People from any other state will pronounce it, “Dog.” 

How to say talk
People from Jersey will pronounce it, “tawlk.” 
People from any other state will pronounce it, “talk.” 

How to use the letter A in a sentence
People from Jersey will pronounce it with a hard “ah” sound. Ex: Gary turns into “Gah-ree” or Aaron turns into “Ah-rin” .
People from any other state will pronounce it with a hard “air” sound. Ex: Gary turns into “Gair-ey” or  Aaron turns into “Air-rin." 

How to say Drawer
People from Jersey will pronounce it, “draw.” Yes, like we are drawing a picture. 
People from any other state will pronounce it, “drawer.” 

How people feel about gas
People from Jersey will say, “You guys don’t have people for that?”
People from any other state will say, “You’re joking,” and will probably want to slap you across the face. 

How people feel about nails
People from Jersey will say, “I need to go and get a fill.” 
People from any other state will say, “Um… what the hell is a fill?” 

How people feel about the supermarket
People from Jersey will say, “Let’s go to Wawa! Can we PLEASE go to Wawa!?”
People from any other state will say, “What the hell is a Wawa?!” 

How people feel about coffee
People from Jersey will say, “Can we go to Dunkin? I absolutely NEED to have more Dunkin!” 
People from any other state will say, “Starbucks is my life.” 

How people feel about breakfast
People from Jersey will say, “Where are my bagels and cream cheese?” 
People from any other state will say, “What is with you people and your bagels and cream cheese!” 

How people think New Jersey is pronounced
People from Jersey will say, “Jersey” without the New.
People from any other state will say, “Oh, you guys don’t pronounce it Joisey?” No, no we do not. 

How living in Jersey is like
People from any other state will say, “OMG you’re from jersey? Have you been to the Jersey Shore?!”
People from Jersey will say, “Yes. Now get out of my face and don’t ever ask me that question again.” 

How people think photos are taken
People from any other state will say, "Okay; one, two, three duckface!"
People from Jersey will say, "Leave before I slap you across the face."

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines.
