Things My Little Brothers Should Know

There's a reason I act like Mom sometimes.

Things My Little Brothers Should Know

You may find it annoying that I still require hugs from you, but as your older sister, I won't allow you to forget that I care. Along with knowing I care, here are some other things you may want to know:

You drive me crazy at times. You have a knack for constantly making strange, irritating noises. I know you are just having some sort of imaginary battle in your head, but still, it gets to be obnoxious after five minutes. Quite honestly, I don't think you are really even aware you are doing it. When I give you an exasperated sigh and demand that you stop, the noise starts up again after a minute or so. So yeah, it's a little annoying that you can't help that you make all these loud, explosion type noises.

I will always spoil you. Even though you can be super annoying, I love to spoil you. I don't take you to the not-so-impressive Lincoln Children's Zoo for my own entertainment. I take you there because you like to go. The same thing goes for parks and The Children's Museum. For some reason, I can't help splurging and buying you things. Just the other day I found myself buying you t-shirts. Also, when you ask me if we can bake cookies, the answer is probably yes. Even though I'm usually left to do most of the work and you just return at the end to reap the rewards, I'll make them anyway. For whatever reason, I can't easily tell you no.

I worry about you. Do you feel sick? Why are you upset? Let me clean up that bloody scrape you have there. Maybe I shouldn't be so concerned, but I am. Sometimes the things you do make me nervous. For example, you tend to run wild on our excursions to the zoo or park. I know it's just because you're excited and are ready to have some fun, but I worry I'll lose sight of you. The last thing I need is for you to disappear on me. I don't care if you are 5 or 15, I'm always going to want to keep one eye on you at all times. No matter how old you get, you'll always be my younger brothers.

I'm basically your second mom. I know, I know, you already have one nagging you to do homework and get your chores done. But when she isn't around, that job falls on me. So yeah, I'm going to make sure you are responsible and get things done. I will ask you why your grade in Social Studies isn't so hot. And I will for sure be checking to make sure no one has been bothering you lately. If someone has, my overprotective side might just come out. Also, being your second mom means I have to make sure you are well fed. So no, you can't just eat Cheetos for lunch, and I don't care if fruit is healthy, you still need some source of protein.

I want you to know that I'll always be there for you. As you get older, the need for an older sister probably seems less necessary to you. While that may be true, I'm still not going to let you forget that I will always be there for you. That's why I take you out to lunch or out for ice cream. It gives me a chance to talk to you with minimal distractions and get to know what is going on in your life. As confusing as listening to your play-by-play reenactments of your favorite TV shows are, I still like to see how excited you get when you tell me about them. I also like it when you tell me about the hilarious thing you or your friends did together. I don't really understand the humor, but because you find it so funny, I usually laugh about it too. Hopefully, because I am invested in your life now, you will remember to come to me in the future if you need me.

Bottom line is this: no matter how old you get, I will always love you.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
