Recently, I went back to my high school and watched my past peers perform this year’s spring musical. I was involved in theater all four years of high school and was really excited to see what they did with it since I've left. They put on a performance of "Chicago," and it blew me away. It was the best production that they have ever done. At that moment, I realized that I miss being in musical like crazy. Here are 11 things I miss about being in high school theater.
1. Auditions
I actually enjoyed auditioning because we knew the directors so well, it didn't make me as nervous as it would auditioning for strangers.
2. The Cast List
Nothing caused more anxiety than waiting for the day they posted that list.
3. Rehearsals
I loved spending every bit of my time doing what I loved.
4. The People
Most of my best friends were made through the musical program. I loved getting to spend so much time with them.
5. The Food
I don't know why, but all we ever seemed to do was eat.
6. Costumes
I loved the chance to be someone different, and the clothes just helped build the character. Not to mention, our costume designer was the best.
7. Tech Week
Even though we complained and basically didn't get any sleep, I enjoyed running on caffeine and adrenaline. Plus, laying in bed at the end of the night was the best because sleep came super easily.
8. Super Saturday
This was the Saturday before show week, when we ran the production, ate a giant meal (which was war getting through), and then ran the show again. It was crazy and stressful (but worth it).
9. The Directors
I was blessed to have amazing directors that have forever left an impact on me.
10. Being on Stage
Nothing compares to actually being on stage, making memories and putting on a show.
11. Curtain Call
I got chills at the end of the show after watching it because as soon as the curtain closes, we would all scream, hug and cry, knowing that we put on an amazing show. It brought back so many memories.
If you are in theater right now, don't waste your time. Take in every moment because it will be something that you'll never forget.
