14 Things My Mother Taught Me

After being away from home for a few months now, I find myself reflecting on all the little life lessons my mom has given me over the years. These lessons help me battle both big and small- you know, those little words of wisdoms every mother gives.

1. It's okay not to be okay sometimes.

It seems kinda obvious, but there are countless times where my mother had to reassure me that sometimes it is okay to be sad.

2. There are plenty of fish in the sea.

Raise your hand if you ever cried to your mom for hours about some stupid boy who you barely even think about now *raises both hands.*

3. Quality is much better than quantity when it comes to friends.

We often got caught up in having the most friends, or even the most followers on social media, but Mom was definitely right that five great friends is better than 10 okay ones.

4. A little lipstick goes a very long way.

I personally take this one very seriously, whenever you feel like you look subpar - put on some lipstick or lip gloss. You're welcome.

5. Appreciate your siblings.

This one was hard to believe when we were younger and constantly fighting with our younger (or older) siblings. But now we totally get it.

6. Appreciate a good home cooked meal.

I used to always want to eat out, like constantly. My mom used to tell me that I should really appreciate her cooking because one day I wouldn't be able to have it anymore. Being in college now, I totally get that.

7. Trust your instincts.

I know it's hard, but sometimes you have a bad feeling about going out but your FOMO kicks in. Trust your instinct - it's totally worth it.

8. Sometimes less is more.

This goes for anything. Sometimes it's jewelry, or makeup or friends.

9. There are very few things that a nap can't fix.

Seriously, take a nap - it'll help you get a fresh look at things when you wake up.

10. Sometimes you just need wine.

No explanation needed here.

11.You don't need anyone who doesn't need you

But seriously, my mom was probably the first person to teach me about my self worth!

12. Be honest

Because, let's be real, it's not that easy. It's not as simple as just 'not lying'- if you feel some way toward someone, you should tell them!

13. Put the phone down

This one is super important. Enjoy the day, dammit!

14. Love yourself

Last, but definitely not least. There is nothing more important than loving yourself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
