My mom is one of the most badass people I know. Her hunger for success and her drive has inspired me ever since I was a little girl. My mom has put the same passion that is in her, in me. There are five important things she has taught me to have the same hunger.
1. Friends will make or break you.
My mom could always sniff out a bad friendship way before I could. She always made it known to me to that my time was precious and I should never waste it by spending time in bad company.
The older my mom got the less energy she had for negative people in her life. Just by watching her cut ties with those who brought her confusion, drama, exhaustion I learned to do the same. Life is too short to be surrounded by negativity and bad friends.
2. Hard work will get you far.
My mom is a hustler. She doesn't sit around waiting for what she wants. Instead, she works hard to get it. She made me realize that life is too short to sit around hoping that someday you get what you want.
She taught me to be smart, to take advantages of the opportunities that I face. She always makes sure I know that there is always someone who wants it just as bad as I do. Luck can only get me so far, what it really comes down to is how much you want it.
3. Understand your worth.
When it comes to men, my mom has never been the type to take to their bull. I have seen my mom go through her ups and downs when it comes to seeing her own worth. She is such a believer that your worth does not come from a man. It comes from within, and then you find a man who is worthy of you. If a man isn't willing to treat you like you are more valuable than gold, then he isn't worth your time. Never settle just to avoid being alone.
4. Education is the key.
For my mom education is the most vital part of success. She came from a home that couldn't afford to send her to get a higher education. So she worked for it herself. Once she gained that she saw how many doors it opened for her, and how badly she wanted that not only for herself but for her kids.
Though for my mom, it wasn't just in a classroom where she believed you could gain a higher education. It was also through people and listening, and reading other thoughts and ideas. For my mom being well-educated on any given subject is powerful. For me, I hunger to be well informed on topics I am passionate about, and it's because of her always pushing me to chase after that knowledge.
5. This life is hard, but it is so good.
This life comes with its challenges. You will get knocked down more times than you can count. Don't let those times take away from how good it can be. There is so much joy to be had. There is so much good in this world, sometimes it just takes us to be the ones to go and seek it.
