What You Miss The Most While Away At College

There's no place like home.

What You Miss The Most While Away At College

Everyone loves the freedom that college provides, but at the same time everyone misses these comforts of home.

1. Your pets.

Everyone wishes they could bring their pet with them to college. Whether you have a dog, hamster or goldfish, your pet is one of your best friends and one of your favorite parts about home. They're a part of your family and you love them just the same.

2. Sleeping in your own bed.

No matter how expensive and soft the mattress topper you got to cover your concrete dorm room bed, nothing compares to your bed at home. It's soft and warm and the most comfortable bed in the world, it also helps that its probably big enough for you to actually fit in.

3. The local restaurants.

If you go to school out of state you probably know the pain of not being able to satisfy a craving because the closest location of that restaurant is eight-hundred miles away. There may be imitations and they may have rave reviews by the locals, but they could never taste as good as your favorite fast food.

4. Home cooking.

There's only so much university cafeteria food that you can eat, with its sub-par flavored food served every day that you eat because you gotta. Home cooking feeds the stomach and the soul and of course it's only available at home.

5. Friends.

Of course your new college friends are great, but those few special friends back home that have stuck with you after high school will always be your best friends. You feel a little guilty every time you share a photo with your new friends knowing that the old ones will see but then you remember all the inside-jokes, the late night conversations, the hang outs, and all the other good times and you know they'll always be there waiting for you when the semester ends.

6. Your privacy.

In college, there's really no such thing as privacy. You share your room and bathroom and you're almost never alone because, of course, your roommate(s). At home, you probably have your own room and you might share a bathroom, but you have a whole lot more me time and a lot less we time.

7. Not having to pay to do your laundry.

Laundry is annoying and it's even more annoying when you have to pay for every wash and every dry. What's even worse is when there are more broken machines than there are functional ones or when the ones that do work don't work very well. The machine at home always works, it doesn't cost you a dollar to use, and your mom or dad is probably the only one to actually do the laundry.

8. Not paying for rides.

If you don't have a car on campus, then you know the struggle of getting anywhere that's not in walking distance. You have to pay for the going and the return trip and you have to trust whoever is giving you the ride especially if you use ubers. Nothing beats having your own car with the freedom and ability to go anywhere at any time.

9. Peace and quiet.

If you're like me then you appreciate a little peace and quiet and even crave having a little silence sometimes. In college, however, it seems there's always some type of noise going on and it's usually loud and obnoxious. You can fin that silence at home, a rare commodity on a college campus.

10. Family

You love your family, even if they are crazy and dysfunctional at times. You know you'll miss them while you're in college, but you never realize how much until they all go back home and leave you sitting in your dorm room. They're your family: they get on your nerves, piss you off, make you cry, and make you laugh, they give you advice, support, and love, and they'll always be there for you at home because they are your home.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
