If many of you grew up in the 90s, then I'm sure some of you watched the anime "Sailor Moon" and the love story that followed.
As a kid, this was one of my favorite TV shows because it showed girls as heroes as opposed to men in most of these shows, while going through typical teenage dramas. I know some may believe that Usagi (Serena) and Mamoru (Darien) were endgame because of what was revealed when they traveled to the future, and I'm not insulting anyone that still believes it. It's just an anime, and we all have our opinions.
However, here's what I've learned from watching the shows.
1. Usagi (Serena) and Rei (Raye) Were not Reliable Friends
If you look back on the show, you see these two fighting like cats and dogs. Usagi may have been oblivious and sensitive, but so am I. I mean, no one's perfect. Rei was always bashing her for not being punctual and neglecting her studies while she acted like little miss perfect. She also said that Usagi didn't deserve Mamoru. Jealousy, anyone? Rei had dated Mamoru first, so it's possible that she still had lingering feelings for him when he jumped to Usagi. Also, the way Rei insulted her behind her back made me want to jump through the screen and kick her ass. What kind of friend is that? Oh, right. The fake one.
2. Usagi and Mamoru--Together Forever...NOT!
Yeah, yeah, yeah...They went to the 30th century and found out they were king and queen and had a kid, but things aren't always set in stone. In the beginning, Usagi was 14 and hated Mamoru for always insulting her. Then, they find out about their secret identities and they're in love? I know it's just fiction, but in the real world, we're not going to the future to find out who our spouses are and what we do. Sorry to say, but them finding out these things never should've happened. They should've progressed without having the knowledge hanging over their heads because they would've been too afraid to break up if one fell out of love. Oh, before the revelation, Mamoru did end things to protect her from dying after a horrific dream; however, he insults her and tells her she was too dumb to be with him? What kind of guy in love does that? If it was me, I would've not bothered trying to reconcile with him and tell him to stay out of my life while moving on with my own, but this is me at 28 and Usagi was 14 at the time.
3. Haruka (Amara) Tenoh and Michiru (Michelle) Kaioh...NOT cousins!
The English Dub ticked me off, and I was 10 or 11 at the time. I knew that they were not cousins from the way they acted in the episodes. Come on. What cousins go to a couple's contest? That would be sick, right? When I first saw them together, I knew they were lovers and not cousins as the dub idiots wanted us to believe. I also knew Haruka was not a guy at first glance. Hello? There are such things as tomboys...I'm one of them. The way they talked to each other and how they always looked like they wanted to sneak in a kiss? English dub, you never fooled me.
4. Usagi Should've Wanted More Than Becoming a Wife and Mother
I know for most of us as a teenager, we want to be married to that special someone who makes our hearts sing. Heck, I wanted that when I was 14, but I also had other goals. I wanted (and still want) to become a never-ending, best-selling author and travel the world and stuff. It's okay to want to be a wife, but what about outside of that? Usagi may have wanted to have a career outside of marriage and motherhood, but we don't know what that was because all we saw was her wanting to be Mamoru's bride. If Naoko Takeuchi and anime writers hadn't kept Usagi's head up Mamoru's ass, then she may have strived for more than being a housewife onscreen and the manga. That's my opinion.
As I've said before, this was not a bashing of the story. I loved"Sailor Moon" and still do, but I think some things could've been changed. Maybe it's me being 28 looking back on a show I loved since I was 10 or learning that not everything in life is set in stone.
