Things I've Learned So Far In College, Part 2

Surviving until Christmas Break seems impossible

Things I've Learned So Far In College, Part 2
Saint Mary's College

1. The library is a magical place

So many rooms! So much space! So much motivation! Coffee machine!

2. Snow boots are a must

Nothing like being underprepared for the first snowfall and getting your shoes and socks all wet because of all the slush and snow. Bleh.

3. Classes being canceled is THE BEST

This is especially true for morning classes, so you don't have to get up as early.

4. Naps help you stay alive

I used to hate taking naps because I'd wake up crankier than I was when I went to sleep. Not true anymore — with four classes in one day, I sleep between all my breaks and it helps me survive.

5. Teachers say the darndest things

You've heard the expression "Kids say the darndest things," but I would argue that that's true for teachers too. Some of my favorites from my professors this semester include: "No matter how bad of a day you're having, Oedipus is having a worse day," "It's Monday, nothing makes sense of Monday," and "Sometimes synapses in your brain are firing and you just need to shut 'em down."

6. The end of the semester creeps up on you

One minute it's the week after fall break, and then suddenly it's a week before finals, and you have a project due tomorrow that you completely forgot about.

7. Surviving the last two weeks before Christmas Break seems impossible

All you want is to go home and see your friends and family, but you still have a million assignments and papers, and finals are looming in the distance.

8. Review sessions are a godsend

Even if you have to walk across campus early in the morning in 20-degree weather, it's so incredibly worth it.

9. Finals Week is THE WORST

So many all-nighters. So much stress. So many tears. People keep yelling "I JUST WANNA GO HOME," and everyone just nods in agreement.

10. It's all about the little things

This is pretty true for life in general. The moments of laughing uncontrollably in the dining hall or library, giving Christmas presents or watching Harry Potter with your friends are the happy little moments to cherish forever :)

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

There have been many lessons learned.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
