20 Things I've Learned In My 20 Years

I just had my twentieth birthday this week... I know I still have a long life left to live but here are twenty things I've learned in my twenty years.

1. Life has it's ups and downs.

Life is like a roller coaster. There are days when everything is going up and others when there are unexpected twists and drops. Enjoy the ride and hang on.

2. Hard work is never over rated.

Hard work is something that many people don't put in the effort to do. Hard work is something that will always be a great skill to have.

3. Mom is your best friend.

Even though she get's on your nerves and you get on hers, at the end of the day, mom has your back and is basically a super hero.

4. Go ahead and have that piece of cake.

As a girl we are often concerned about our body image and weight. It's perfectly fine to have that piece of cake because, let's face it, what's life without a treat every now and then?

5. Working out sucks... But it's the best form of therapy.

No one likes going and working out, it can be terrible. But working out, even if you just take a walk, is one of the best things you can do for yourself.

6. Be passionate about something.

Whether it's a sports team, social movement, or your favorite hobby find passion and don't be afraid to show you care about something.

7. Confidence is the best thing you can wear.

You would never put your best friend down, so why put yourself down?

8. People are the worst and the best.

People have an immense amount of hate but they also have an immense amount of love, compassion, and understanding.

9. Time really does heal all wounds.

In the moment things seem much worse than they actually are. With time anything can heal.

10. Everyone in your life teaches you something.

Whether it's a new point of view, lesson, or random fact each person you interact with teaches you something new.

11. Some lessons you have to learn yourself.

You never actually know if the stove is hot until you test it out for yourself.

12. Spending money on experiences is better than spending it on things.

Things break, go out of date, or are no longer relevant. Memories, however, last forever.

13. Take pictures! Lots of pictures!

Pictures help capture a moment in time, that memory that will last forever.

14. Naps are amazing.

Whether it's a twenty minute power nap or a four hour nap, you always feel refreshed after getting some extra z's.

15. Comparing yourself to others is never a good idea.

Life is always greener on the other side.

16. Getting lost in a book is one of the greatest feelings.

Some people say that they don't like reading, I just think they haven't found the right book yet.

17. No one has life figured out.

No ones life is put together, some people are just better at pretending like they are put together.

18. Education is important.

Whether it's to get a better job or to open your mind to the world around you, education is important.

19. Enjoy the moment.

Put down the phone, the social media, and live life in that moment.

20. There's more coming.

There's more out there than the pain or sadness you might be going through right now. Everything get's better.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
