Eight Things that Happen When You Go To A Small College

It's not that I don't want to hear about your second cousin's family barbecue this weekend, it's just I don't want to hear about it.

1. You know your social circle's schedule by heart.

No need to worry about who you'll have lunch with and when, because you've memorized everyone's schedule.

2. Subsequently, you've also memorized your crush's schedule.

"OMG! I had NO idea you would be eating lunch at 11:45 today!" (Like he does every single day of the week.) Act surprised to "run into him," but don't be too obvious. Also, this could be considered stalking to some, but ignore the haters.

3. You know everything about everyone.

Like, everything. Middle name? Check. Hometown? Check. Major? Check. It's not that I don't want to hear about your second cousin's family barbecue this weekend, it's just I don't want to hear about it.

4. If you ever decide to skip a class, you end up seeing the professor that day.

Usually what happens is that after you send that email about "feeling under the weather," you end up seeing the professor at lunch. And you look fine. *feigns cough*

5. Every potential for a date party is either not single or going with someone else.

This is why at small schools girls ask guys like a billion months in advance. All of the nice, fun dates get taken fast. You've been warned, ladies.

6. Subsequently, you see that terrible date everywhere.

This one has to be the worst. Remember freshman year and that guy that ended up being an awful date? Well, you basically see him everyday on campus. Tip: When you see him walking your way on campus, pretend to be on the phone. This may seem a little suspicious after four or five times, but stay committed to it...believe me.

7. A late-night coffee run means seeing everyone on campus.

Like, all 300 people. And you look like you've just rolled out of bed, because well, you have. Based on personal experience, people will be so alarmed at your outward appearance that they will skip the usual small talk.

8. You end up making the best friends you could've ever imagined.

Despite the awkward run-ins, stalking tendencies, and the fact that everyone knows your business, you actually come to appreciate all of these things about your college. By the far, the best part is the friendships you develop.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
