10 Things That Happen When You Lose Your Voice

10 Things That Happen When You Lose Your Voice
Kristina Flour

You never realize how much you need your voice until you lose it. We take the beauty of talking for granted until we can't do it anymore. We don't really know why our voice decided to run away, and waiting around for it to come back is such a pain, because it decides when it wants to work again.

Whether its from a concert you went to the night before, yelling at a sports game, or from illness, losing your voice will eventually happen. And let me tell you what.

It freaking sucks.

1. Basically becoming the Little Mermaid.

Ariel, I don't know how you did it. Not only learning how to communicate with a handsome prince, but also getting him to fall in love with you? The Starbucks barista can't even understand what drink I want when I don't have my voice. Teach me your ways.

2. The Pitch Perfect Jokes Get Old.

It might be nodes, but I cant even say my witty comeback when you come at me with Pitch Perfect Jokes.

3. "Wow, your boyfriend must love that you can't talk."

Most disrespectful thing somebody has said to me while I lost my voice. This implies that I'm annoying or nagging. He helps me out, talks to people on the phone for me since they can't hear me, and is taking care of me. If anything, not having my voice is inconvenient and annoying him because having a conversation with somebody who can only whisper is hard. Don't be rude.

4. All the tea.

When you get to the 5th cup of the day, it gets really old.

5. Having to use non-verbal communication instead of talking.

I didn't realize how many people say hello to me during the day until I couldn't respond. I can't thank people for holding doors, I can't go through the drive-through, the lady at the bank couldn't hear me when I started whispering. So instead, I use awkward hand motions.

6. Attempting to write down responses.

It's so hard to have a conversation when one person can talk, and the other has to take the time to write down everything they want to say.

7. I can't answer the phone.

Over the phone you can't see my non-verbal's, and since I can't use my voice, using the phone isn't really a way for us to communicate. What I'm saying is don't call me, because I won't be able to say anything. I can't even say hello when I pick up.

8. "Hey! Did you get your voice back yet?!"

I wish.

9. Starting attempts at conversations by getting really close and whispering "I lost my voice."

Being that close to you is so awkward, but if I don't do it, you cant hear me. Apologies in advance.

10. "What? I can't hear you!"

I know you can't. I lost my voice.

So to my voice, I don't know where you went, or why you left, but please come back.

Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
