Looking back at my high school experience, the memories that stick out to me are mostly theater related. The rest are either from choir or class. Unfortunately, I couldn't continue theater once I got to college because I'm not a theater major and don't have the time to commit to a show anymore.
Despite that, there are a few feelings that I'll always remember from high school theater — and somedays I wish I could go back and do it all again.
1. The first time that you see the sunlight after school after months of rehearsals that run until 8:00 p.m. or later.
I can still remember the screams and hisses of all of the disgruntled theater kids as they walked outside and the sunlight hit them for the first time in about three months. Ah, memories...
2. When it's time for your dress rehearsal and nobody's ready.
That set piece? Yeah, still working on it. That line that you know but always forget? Well, that's a problem too. Either way, everything worked out in the end.
3. When it's opening night, you can hear the auditorium filling up, and you get that wonderful nervous/excited feeling.
You already had your energy circle and pep talk; now all that's left is to perform and you don't know if you can stand still anymore.
4. When you're doing curtain call and realize that everything magically fell into place.
All those months of preparing, and it all came together. Now for a few more performances and strike and it's all over.
5. When you realize it's closing night,
Sure, you were stressed out during the show because you had rehearsals and homework and had to try and figure out how to do it all, but you'll miss seeing your cast and crew mates everyday.
Also, if it's a musical, you might even find yourself missing that measure that you worked on a million times or that one really fun dance number.
6. When it's time to strike the set.
Not only is it a long process, but it's also really freaking sad. Strike marks the end of a show that gave you a ton of wonderful memories.
7. When it's time for senior goodbyes.
8. When you find out what next year's shows are going to be.
This is the moment where everything is great again. (Unless you're a senior and don't get to come back — then you get a little bit jealous.) There will always be more shows to take you on an emotional roller coaster ride and "_________ will make a great Annie!"
9. When audition season rolls around and you get to do it all again.
Buckle up freshmen; you don't even know what's coming.
