The good and the bad.

Elementary school always seemed like the glory days of school before people got nasty, drama occurred, and of that lovely stuff. But something that I have found over the years that many public school elementary schools have several things in common.

1. Pizza Every Friday

In elementary school, I know me among several other students always looks forward to Friday because our school got pizza Hut Pizza almost every Friday, and that was the good stuff. Some Friday, but not often, they would make the stuff crust pizza, which was the best stuff because it always tasted so fresh. That was also back in the days when the lunch ladies would actually make the lunches and not just get them out of a box and heat it up.

2. Thinking Everyone Lives in the Same Neighborhood

In elementary school, I always thought that everyone in my school lived in the same neighborhood as me for some crazy reason... But then I discovered that where I live has several more neighborhoods than mine. For some reason, this hit me hard because I thought I could just walk to everyone's house and not have to be driven.

3. The Tear-Out Homework From our "Textbooks"

Most of the time when we got homework, it was from our little "textbooks". We all felt special because we got to intentionally tear out a page from the books, even though they weren't true textbooks as we could come to learn later.

4. Getting Excited When There Was A New Student

Everyone always got excited when there was a new student because we were essentially stuck with the same people for five years, and it honestly got boring sometimes, especially when you were the kid that wasn't particularly popular and you didn't have many friends. If you were that kid (which I definitely was) you took advantage of that because you tried to get to them right away so you could try and get a new friend.

5. Music Class Concerts That You Were Forced To Go To

I haven't heard this from every person that I met, but most elementary schools have music classes and every season, except summer, there is a concert that you have to be into complete the class because it was literally graded for attendance. While that was one of my favorite things to do, many other people hated it because singing wasn't really their forte.

6. The Cool Playground vs. The Boring One

Most elementary schools have at least two different playgrounds; the boring black top and the really fun wooden one (before they started to take all of them away for some reason) and most children hoped that the fun one wouldn't be wet because then we would be forced to go on the boring black top where there is nothing to play on and you were forced to actually attempt to play with other children. If you couldn't find anyone else to play with, it was going to be THE longest part of the day.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.
