1. That time of the semester when all of your papers are magically due the same week.
It’s like all the English professors in the department got together and said, “Lets torture our students and make all of our papers due the week of April 4!”
2. The one professor who always expects you to read an entire novel in 2 days.
You know which one we are talking about. It’s the same professor who wants to squeeze an entire literary movement into 16 weeks. Oh yeah, and they also think their class is the only one you are taking
3. All of your friends think you are their personal paper proofreader.
“Hey so we haven’t hung out in forever and I miss you!!!!!! Also, I have a paper due tomorrow…if I send it to you now could you look over it??” *Eyeroll*
4. You are expected to know and use all of the big, fancy words in the English language.
Basically everyone around thinks you speak like you just walked out of a Charles Dickens novel. Instead of saying “There’s extra pizza in the fridge” they want you to say “There’s superfluous amounts of pizza inside of the refrigerator” Like hello, I’m not a dictionary.
5. You constantly get asked, "What will you even do with an English degree?"
Oh silly you! Well, I could teach, write, edit, blog, publish… just to name a few choices. I pretty much have my pick, not that I’m bragging or anything.
6. Your favorite belongings have some author or book cover on them.
You don’t go anywhere without your Great Gatsby tote and Shakespeare journal.
7. You've read Romeo and Juliet multiple times and still get angry at their stupidity.
*Throws book at floor* YOU’RE CHILDREN!!!! YOU DON’T EVEN KNOW WHAT LOVE IS!!!!
8. You have your favorite book and get personally offended when someone says they don't like it.
Excuse me, did you just say that Pride and Prejudice sucks? Yeah we can’t be sisters anymore.
9. American Lit. versus British Lit.: Is it really possible to just like one?
Melville is amazing, but Austen brings you life. How can one choose?
10. The feeling of defeat when you can't find something on SparkNotes.
While you don't let SparkNotes do allllll the work, it is a definite lifesaver at times.
11. The MLA Handbook is your Bible.
Ask me how to cite anything and I can tell you. If you ever need an MLA handbook, I have 5. (Ask me about any other citation format… well, I haven’t a clue.)
