5 Things I Wish My Dogs Understood
Starelief

My dogs are one of the most important things in my life. They’re always there to put a smile on my face and they’ve been constant in my life for years. I always know that no matter what kind of day I have, when I come home I’ll be greeted by three dogs that love me unconditionally. Although they understand some things I say, they don’t understand everything. Here are five things I wish my dogs understood:

1. I miss you guys the most while I’m away at college

It’s true (sorry mom and dad). Everyone else in the family understands why I have to leave after I’m home during breaks, and why I’m gone for so long. But you guys don’t. It breaks my heart when I leave each time. Seeing you guys stand at the door watching me go makes me feel like an awful person. But I have to go to school so I can get a well-paying job and give my future dogs a great life someday. You guys get it, right?

2. Walks are not fun when it’s below freezing outside

I understand that you guys really like walks and hiking. Believe me, I do too. Getting outside and going somewhere besides the yard to explore is always a great time. It’s slightly less fun, though, when it’s cold outside. I always try to take you guys on walks whenever I can while I’m home, but when I can see my breath or there’s snow on the ground, I tend to avoid it. I would much rather lay on the couch with you guys in those cases and watch a movie, and just relax. I know it isn’t as great as going on a walk, but it’s still fun.

3. Treats are like dessert

Okay, now for the serious topic. Treats. I know that’s the thing that makes you guys the happiest in life, aside from walks and belly rubs. I know you all would eat the entire treat box if you were given the opportunity. But treats are just like dessert. If you didn’t eat dessert in moderation, it wouldn’t be as desired. Also, if you ate dessert all the time, you would be fat. So we’re just trying to keep you guys happy and healthy. I know you'd also like to eat certain household items (like my bath bombs), but that isn't good for you. Just trust me.

4. Naps are only good when you join me

This could not be more true. Naps at school just aren’t the same. I miss having you guys curled up at my feet, underneath my covers snuggled up to my legs, or sharing my pillow with me. I miss snuggling and the warmth that you give off. My bed feels empty without you in it.

5. This summer is going to be a great one

I’m making it my personal goal to make this summer the best one yet. Even though I’ll be working full time, I promise that we’ll go on so many walks and hikes. We’ll play in the backyard. I’ll fill up your pool, and you guys can play together when it gets too hot outside. We’ll take naps together, and be lazy when it’s rainy outside. I’ll be home for months, and we’ll make those months memorable.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
