Things College Students Miss from Home and from School

Every senior awaits to go to college. They think freedom, partying and meeting new people. All those things are fun and exciting but it is important to remain in the moment and make the most out of your last year at home and in school. Before you know it, August will be right around the corner. As a freshman in college, I can honestly say I miss home and I am not afraid to say it. Don’t get me wrong I love college but change can be hard. Home is where you grew up and it can be difficult to let it go. One thing to keep in mind is that change is good and trust that going away to college will lead you to great things. Here are just some things you will miss while you are at college:

  • You are going to miss waking up and seeing your parents every morning tell you, “good luck at school today.”
  • You will miss seeing your friends all together in one place when you step into class
  • You will miss fighting with your siblings on a daily basis
  • You will miss dad’s home cooked meals
  • You will miss having free weekends to literally do nothing
  • You will miss high school homework even though at the times it seemed impossible to do
  • You will miss going on lunch dates with your mom
  • You will miss listening to everyone’s day at family dinners
  • You will miss having your own room
  • You will miss the structure of high school
  • You will miss playing on your high school's sports team
  • You will miss 40 minute classes
  • You will miss being able to ask your parents for twenty bucks on a whim
  • You will miss having cable tv
  • You will miss all your teachers in high school who were so supportive of you
  • You will miss your parents doing your laundry
  • You will miss having your own bathroom
  • You will miss having your own privacy

These are just some things you will miss from home and in school. After all, the list could go on and on. I know throughout college I will miss most of these things but I am sure there will come a point when I won’t be thinking about this stuff. I am enjoying my time at Elon and wouldn’t change a thing because this is where I bELONg.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.
