Thanksgiving is a wonderful time of the year. Who doesn't love eating as much food as their hearts could possibly desire? Being a student in college, it has been almost three months since I have been home and seen my family. So I am very ready to be home with my family, friends and of course my pets, for a holiday that you can eat a lot of food and be thankful for everything you have.
There are not many things I like more than my family and food. However, Theta Thanksgiving is a very close second. Theta Thanksgiving is our major signature philanthropy event put on by my sorority every fall to raise money for Court Appointed Special Advocates, or better known as CASA. Every year, the week before Thanksgiving break, all of my sisters of Kappa Alpha Theta cook copious amounts of food including turkey, mashed potatoes, and stuffing. We host this event at our house and sell tickets for five dollars a plate. People can come and eat as much Thanksgiving food they can.
This event is so important to all of us because CASA is such an amazing program for children in foster care. These are people designated to a child in the foster care system who act as an advocate in the courts and a support system throughout their entire experience in custody. We raise this money to support a volunteer for each child. These are people who volunteer, and all the money goes to the program to pay for anything the child may need from clothes to even just ice cream.
We held this event this weekend and had such an amazing turnout and raised so much money. We are all so passionate and are thankful for everyone who helped us surpass the amount we made last year, which was over $3,000. Having a sister who we adopted through the foster system, this philanthropy is very close to my heart. I could not be more thankful for Kappa Alpha Theta and the amazing leaders and passionate women it has introduced me too.
