I have been listening to The Beatles for as long as I can remember. John, Paul, George, and Ringo make a great combination and I will never get tired of their music. I don't think I'd be able to pick a favorite song, or album, for I love all of their music. However, some of their lyrics speak volumes, which is why I have picked a few of my favorites to list below. From their beginning to The End, here are some of their lyrics that speak to me.
"Oh we danced through the night
And we held each other tight
And before too long
I fell in love with her"
"I Saw Her Standing There" Please Please Me
I am such a hopeless romantic, and so many of their songs contribute to my love of love. However, this song I think is one of the greatest, especially because of how simple it is. Boy sees girl, they dance together, and fall in love. Combined with the upbeat music, I could dance all through the night to this. This gives me butterflies and makes me smile because of how much I love the story in the song.
"Doesn't have a point of view
Knows not where he's going to
Isn't he a bit like you and me?"
"Nowhere Man" Rubber Soul
In my teen angst years (which I might still be going through) I always connected with this bit of the song. I have no idea where I'm going or what I'm going to do, but I'm not alone, right? With my mindset of "eh, it's whatever," I felt a connection with this song and it remains in my top ten favorites of The Beatles.
"Happiness is a warm gun
Happiness is a warm gun, mama
When I hold you in my arms
And I feel my finger on your trigger
I know nobody can do me no harm "
"Happiness Is A Warm Gun" The Beatles (also known as The White Album)
These lyrics are a little dark, which might be why I find them so interesting. To take the lyrics literally, the idea of relying on a gun for comfort seems so dark and somewhat mysterious. Lennon said in an interview about his inspiration for the song, "I thought it was a fantastic, insane thing to say. A warm gun means you've just shot something." I agree, it is insane. Which might be why I love the song so much.
"Don't want to leave her now
You know I believe and how
You're asking me will my love grow
I don't know, I don't know
You stick around now it may show
I don't know, I don't know"
"Something" Abbey Road
Possibly one of the best love songs of all time (in my opinion) these lyrics are close to my heart. It makes me swoon with how much love George Harrison has for his woman here. Harrison perfectly describes love, saying he doesn't know why he feels the way he does, but he is certain he loves her. The song is simple and slow, but has a lot of power behind each word.
"I am he as you are he as you are me
And we are all together"
"I Am The Walrus" Magical Mystery Tour
To be honest, I love every word in this song. I could write about how there could be psychedelic drug references, or how it's about a girl, or to dive into some deeper meaning, but there is none. Lennon was said to have written the song to confuse those who kept trying to find a deeper meaning in his songs. Therefore, I have put no thought into this song. I love it solely because it is about nothing. Which is a reminder to all, sometimes there is no meaning unless you create one yourself.
