We are all similar, yet we are all different.

There Is No Such Thing As A "Typical Sorority Girl"

I have seen countless articles about sorority girls all being the same and countless articles firing back about how we aren't all the same. I never paid much attention to any of it because I always felt like people were creating drama out of nothing. We all know we aren’t the same, so who cares what other people think, right?

Then someone said it directly to me. “You’re a typical sorority girl.” Suddenly, I was personally offended.

I never viewed myself as the “typical sorority girl.” Then I started to think, are some of us really all the same? I realized that, yes, in some ways we are all very similar. I also realized that, no, we aren’t all exactly the same. So both arguments, in my opinion, are invalid.

If we are in the same sorority then, yes, we are all somewhat very similar if you compare us all. NEWS FLASH: we ended up in our sorority because the sisters rushing us knew we would fit in with the other sisters because of what we like, the morals we have, what we do in our free time, our personalities, etc. But in the bigger picture, each and everyone of us is very different and brings something new to the sisterhood, which is another reason why we were chosen.

All sorority girls value grades differently. You may think we are all “dumb,” but we aren’t. All sororities have GPA requirements. Some are higher or lower than others, but that doesn’t make us all dumb. Maybe you met a sorority girl once who you classified as “dumb," but I bet she just isn’t as smart as you think you are.

All sorority girls aren’t “easy.” This one bugs me the most because this is the most stereotypical thing you can say about us. We all have different morals. That doesn’t mean one girl's morals are better than another girl's morals. If we are all “easy” then you are implying that you know us all personally and can provide facts to support the claim that we are all “easy,” and maybe that isn’t such a good thing for you.

One thing that definitely makes us all the same though, is how much we love our letters. Every sorority girl I have ever met is so proud to wear her letters and defend them. Every sorority girl is also happy to defend other letters because #PanLove is a real thing, and we will watch out for each other. We aren’t “catty,” and we don’t “hate” each other based on letters.

I have never been so proud to be a part of such a strong never-ending bond with my sisters. Each and every one of us, and every sorority girl regardless of the letters she wears, brings something amazing to the table. Sure, we all enjoy similar things and do similar activities to some extent. But, if anyone took the time to meet multiple girls of all different letters, they would realize that we are all different for reasons, similar for reasons, and all amazing for reasons.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
