John Green has been all over the young adult literature scene lately, and even Hollywood with his works being made into films. From "the Fault in Our Stars" to "Paper Towns," his works of literature are becoming more popular and his fan base seems to be multiplying by the day. But, what is so special about Mr. John Green?

John Green’s obvious quality is his writing talent. He has published six award-winning young adult fictional novels and has co-written one. These novels seem to have a running theme: teenagers falling in love, teenagers finding themselves, or teenagers falling in love and finding themselves. John Green writes with humor and wit, but he also has the ability to pull you in. Once you become invested in the characters you are reading about, you cannot seem to stop. These novels face real life issues and are easily relatable. Once you finish one novel, you have an immediate urge to begin another.

John Green is a YouTube sensation, to say the least. Beginning in 2007, he and his brother, Hank Green, launched their YouTube channel “VlogBrothers.” They saw so much success come out of this channel, so they began an additional YouTube channel, which is called“CrashCourse." This has been one of my personal favorites ever since I began taking AP classes in high school, as it goes through reviews entire units of many subjects in under ten-minute videos. Between the two of these YouTube channels, it began getting John Green exposure to his non-literary fan base, which then multiplied even more.

By now, you may be wondering about this fan base I keep mentioning. John Green has a blog, and this is where the magic happens. Upon visiting this blog, you will see a couple hundred times “DFTBA” which translates to
"Don’t Forget To Be Awesome." You can think of this as a sort of inside joke between John, his brother Hank, and the fans. Also, the term “nerdfighter” is used quite a lot. The purpose of being a nerdfighter is not to fight nerds as the name implies but to decrease world suck and be a community that cares for one another. Lastly, the most important John Green fandom quote you need to know is the following “drizzle/hurricane metaphor” that John Green is literally internet famous for writing in his novel, "Looking for Alaska," “If people were rain, I was drizzle and she was a hurricane.”

Of course, John Green also loves philanthropy! In addition to his YouTube channel in 2007, Green introduced his charity project called Project for Awesome, a project in which YouTube users took two days (December 12 and 13, 2014) to create videos promoting charities or non-profit organizations of their choosing.
