There Is Beauty In Simplicity

Simplicity isn't a lack of value.

There is beauty in simplicity. We build this idea that every act has to be one of grandeur to be celebrated. Mistakes shame and embarrass us (even the small, silly ones), our day to day habits we don't even think twice about, and even the small successes are shrugged off because they don't seem good enough. While huge accomplishments are worthy of celebration, it's easy to let those little things slip between the cracks. Life happens in those cracks.

If you're constantly waiting for the next big thing, you're missing out on what's truly important in life: the lessons, the laughter, even the embarrassment. Cherish what you learn when things happen, value each experience because it's truly unique and you won't experience a moment exactly like it ever again. The simplicity of your day to day errands may seem underwhelming, but view that chore as a unique opportunity to live out your life the best you can. When you drop a tray of muffins at work (yes, this may have happened to me), laugh at yourself and appreciate the humor/mortification at your mistake. Even the big mistakes that seem like they'll tear your world apart, know they won't. You're learning, and growing pains may hit you hard, but at least you're growing in the right direction.

Finding joy in the simple things isn't always easy but it brings so much light into your life. There may be times that's all your left with. Life can get tough, it can be embarrassing, it can be messy, or bring you amazing, out of this world opportunities, and that's normal. But remember to appreciate all of the things in between; time with friends, errands, those endlessly dragging shifts at work because that's when you can make some of the best memories. There is so much beauty awaiting in the messy, in-between moments of life. Simplicity isn't a lack of value, it's an opportunity to discover the value awaiting in it.

Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
