The Netflix documentary series "Making a Murderer" came to Netflix December 18 and is already something everyone is talking about. It follows a man, Steven Avery, who was wrongfully convicted of murder in 1985 and served 18 years in prison for it. Then, a couple of years after he was released, he was convicted of another murder that most people believe was also wrongful. If you've seen it, you know the murder case was left open-ended and is still going on today.
After watching, viewers become very involved and want Avery to get justice for the unlucky events that have consumed his adult life. I mean, who wouldn't? I feel for Steven's family as well -- you can really hear their pain through all the sincere "yeah"s on their phone calls. Personal theories speculating what might've happened and opinions on the story itself have sprung up. I've rounded up some of the best theories, thoughts, and opinions from all over the Internet.
1. Coincidence Theory
This theory is just from a fan who shared their speculation in a YouTube video. It's very extensive but it involves Ryan Hillegas (Teresa's ex-boyfriend) and Mike Halbach (Teresa's brother) finding the *RAH-V* 4, Officer Colborn showing up to identify it (hence the call to the station), Colborn taking the key and telling them to keep quiet, giving the key to LT Lenk, while Bobby and his step-dad Scott Dassey kill Teressa and burn the remains. They suggest the finding of the car and the murder were two unrelated events that just happen to work out to frame Steven. The article has credible and thought-provoking reasons for saying what they think and it goes into more a lot more detail if you want to know more.
2. Celebrities' Thoughts On #MakingAMurderer
Because celebrities and their thoughts are so important, here is what a few thought of the docu-series.
3. "17 Thoughts You Had Watching Making A Murderer" Video
The BuzzFeed video is circulating Facebook and YouTube sharing relatable feelings people have when they watch the documentary. The couple mentions the compelling factor that makes the season impossible to stop watching, how Steven's attorney's are so likable, the devastation after episode 8, and how everything that happens is so unbelievable. The video is funny because it's so accurate. It had my friends and I wishing we came up with the idea because we said some of the same things that were mentioned in the video upon binge-watching.
4. Edward Wayne Edwards Theory
A cold case expert has the idea that a man named Edward Wayne Edwards -- not mentioned in the documentary -- could have actually committed the Teresa Halbach murder. He has many reasons to think so, such as the fact that this man has killed a bunch of people (usually on Halloween nights), multiple people have been wrongfully executed for crimes he committed, and he can be seen in the background of the documentary. Edwards is known for showing up at the funerals of the people he killed, so the expert thinks that may be why he was at the court hearing where Steven was sentenced to jail. There's a 13-minute video and a detailed explanation here. It's worth the read.
5. The Many On-Point Tweets
Most of "31 Tweets From People Losing Their Mind Over 'Making A Murderer'" are totally true and worth reading so that you can find comfort in the fact that everyone feels the same way you do about this heartbreaking story.
I currently have a brainstorm of my own that my roommates and I created because it's so addicting and we couldn't rest without thinking about it for ourselves:
So what do you think? Do you have your own theory or you think highly of someone else's? Or, are you still too shaken up from your 10 hours of misery that you don't have the mental capacity to form a thoughtful idea? Same. You have to look at the facts, do the research and look to your gut to decide for yourself. I just hope justice for Steven Avery and his family to be forthcoming, true, and so so sweet.
