Valentine's Day In Elementary School Is Nothing Like It Is Now

Reminiscing on how Valentine's Day has changed between elementary school and college

Valentine's Day In Elementary School Is Nothing Like It Is Now

Decking out a shoe box in stickers and glitter better than the rest of your class, picking out the best cards for your friends, and using class time to celebrate instead of listening to a lesson...those were the good 'ole days...

Anticipation

Elementary School: The weeks and days leading up to Valentine's Day were no joke. Perfection is the only word that comes to mind when reminiscing on the days of scouting for the coolest cards and picking out the best candy.

College: Christmas is hardly over before Target is engulfed in candy hearts and red roses. Everywhere you go you're surrounded by the reminder that another holiday is on the horizon well in advance.

Gift Giving

Elementary School: Back in elementary school you had no choice but to give everyone in your class a valentine.

College: Whether its a boyfriend or girlfriend, or just treating yourself to your favorite box of chocolate, one gift is all it takes.

Parties

Elementary School: It was one of the few times a year that you rejoiced for the fact that teachers weren't scolding you for binging on potato chips and soda. If you were really lucky, your teacher probably let you watch TV or a non-educational movie in school too.

College: Two words: date functions. The daunting task of finding a date and the perfect dress looms overhead, and soda is traded in for a bottle of wine and potato chips have turned into late night pizza.

Priorities

Elementary School: Valentine's cards and candy were staples. No Valentine's Day was complete without picking out the coolest cards that would beat out everyone else's. Having a decorative box to collect them from other people was also up there on the list.

College: The spectrum changes. Priorities range from a dinner on the town with your significant other, to a Galentine's day with your best girlfriends.

Homework

Elementary School: You know it was going to be a good week when your homework packet included a crossword puzzle or word search activity as an assignment instead of the typical math homework.

College: Special homework assignments for a holiday? HA! Good one...

The End Result

Elementary School: At the end of the day going home with a decorated shoe box full of nice messages from all your friends and more candy than you could dream about was more than enough to keep you satisfied.

College: You're reminded that you're surrounded by friends the love you unconditionally no matter what day of the year it is. It doesn't get better than that.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
