As the year of 2015 comes to a close, I think it’s safe to say that this has been one of the biggest years of nostalgia we’ve had. 2014 was a very well-rounded year in music, TV, and film; with classic musical artists returning, new artists coming to the forefront, the emergence of great new TV shows, and a perfect balance of blockbusters, sequels, indie films, and award-winning films.
This year has been pulling nostalgia strings from the beginning, mainly in TV and film.
In TV we have the continuation of Disney Channel’s "Girl Meets World," the sequel show to the classic 90s show "Boy Meets World." We also had the announcement of Netflix’s "Fuller House," the sequel to "Full House."
The year of 2015 is the year Marty McFly saw in the 80s flick "Back to the Future: Part II." So many BuzzFeed articles, Twitter posts, and Facebook posts were paying homage to the beloved series and making comparisons between what the filmmakers thought the year would look like and what it actually was. News publications released articles; CNN, ABC News, and Jimmy Kimmel aired an entire special featuring Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd showing up in their classic DeLorean.
This fall, critics and fans alike were blown away by the "Rocky" reboot and sequel, "Creed." When I saw this poster pop up on the internet earlier this year, it totally went under my radar. It wasn’t until it was almost out that I realized it was a new installment in the "Rocky" series. Film lovers and journalists alike are saying it has Oscar potential.
So many movies this year were sequels or reboots of old films and TV shows, starting in the spring with "Mad Max: Fury Road." This incredible film introduced a film series that most of us millennials hadn’t heard of or seen before. The cool thing about this flick is that it was remade by its original writer and director. We also saw a remake of the horror film "Poltergeist," a sequel to "The Terminator," and an incredible new installment to the "Mission Impossible" franchise.
But the biggest movie of the summer was the sequel and reboot "Jurassic World." This movie broke Box Office records and got everybody excited and talking for a long time. Director Colin Trevorrow managed to reintroduce this franchise to a new generation very successfully and created a platform for a whole lot of new films to come after it. He even managed to get picked up by Disney and Lucasfilm to direct "Star Wars: Episode IX."
Speaking of "Star Wars," this year we finally received the sequel, reboot, and nostalgia trip that fans have been waiting for since "Return of the Jedi" in 1983. When Disney acquired Lucasfilm in 2012, we knew it meant new "Star Wars" movies, and a whole lot of them. It’ll be great to see where they go with the future of this iconic universe.
Overall, this year has been filled with nostalgia and warmth, which is definitely an upside as we arrive at the holiday season. I just hope that from these handful of years of nostalgia -- we know 2016 will be one as well -- that creativity will spark in people to find new gems and pearls rather than just polishing the ones that are already on the shelf.
