The Worst Things About Finals Week

Let's face it, Finals Week is a stressful time and we all know it. You could be the most on your game, never procrastinate kind of person, and you still feel the pinch and tug of anxiety over your tests, papers, projects, and dwindling hours of sleep. Realistically, most of us are not nearly that responsible, and we are finding ourselves really sweating it out as we make a full sprint to the finish line that is Christmas break. Metaphorically, of course. We don't run. It's one of the many reasons our stress stays at peak levels. Yeah, finals are pretty much the worst, and I've been asking students all over campus about their least favorite parts. Here's what they told me:

1. "Professors pile it all on at the end."

Remember all those weeks you breezed by with no homework? Nights at the bar, staying up late hanging with friends, and hours upon hours of Netflix? You have two weeks to do all the works your professors didn't assign you then and decided to assign you now.

2. "I did this to myself, and I'm having to face that reality."

Here's to you procrastinators. At least you can own up to it.

3. "I've tried really hard to stay afloat this semester, but I just had to doggie paddle and I feel like I'm drowning here at the end."

Bless your heart for trying. It really was a tough semester, huh?

4. "What is sleep?"

Sometimes when I watch The Walking Dead, I realize how much it looks like campus, and I get afraid.

5. "Well, this is my third cup of coffee today."

...It was 9 am. That's pretty much what it looks like to come out on the other end of an all-nighter. For some students, that could be a couple days a week, and even worse, for some, it's all of finals week. It often depends on their previous levels of procrastination relative to how motivated they actually are to pass the class.

6. "I know it will, but I feel like this will never end."

You feel almost ready to call Mom and tell her you're missing Christmas this year. Then again, Christmas is all you're living for right now.

7. "The internal battle between 'treat yo self' and 'don't fail, or you'll never be able to treat yo self again.'"

I need a break from school, but I don't have money because I'm paying for school to get the degree that I need to get a job to make money to eventually be able to afford to take a break from work.

8. "Lots of crying."

And you'll see people crying everywhere. There are no safe zones from crying.

9. "Sometimes we joke how about if someone dies during the final, we all get an A. Sometimes, I don't know if we're joking anymore. I volunteer as tribute."

*Cringes* You'd be surprised how often I hear this one.

10. "Realizing you have to do this all again in a few months."

If you graduate this semster, we all envy you.

11. "I'm a nursing student."

We're all praying for you.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
