As most of you have heard about in the news, there was a mass shooting at Pulse - a gay nightclub located in Orlando, Florida. The fact that I am writing about this and that this probably has not been fixed or addressed by now, is frustrating and sad. I’m so sick and tired of seeing day after day, month after month, year after year that there have been more shootings. It’s come to the point, where I don’t even want to watch the news anymore. We’ve become accustomed to these types of things happening and that is terrifying.
These individuals were out with their friends and loved ones, having a great time and just being in the moment, however, someone had to come and ruin that for everyone. We live in a country where we truly cherish our freedom of speech, but have we become a nation that takes that right, to another level? Absolutely. It’s one thing to state an opinion, which everyone is entitled to have, but to bring physical pain onto certain types of individuals because you don’t agree with their opinion, is just crossing the line. People should be mature enough to understand that they cannot control others simply because they have an opinion. Also, just walk away. Be mature and smart enough to walk away from a situation that you do not like. But no, we resort to violence to solve the problem.
How many more innocent people need to die and be hurt for there to be changes involving gun laws? We may sit here and chat about gun laws and how there need to be changes for about two months, and then we move onto the next problem but for those directly impacted by any mass shooting or horrific event like this, this conversation will never end. The victims and their families will live with this moment forever.
Many people usually say “We live in a scary world” after moments like these and they are right to a certain extent, its not the world that’s what scary to me, it’s people that do harm in this world that scary me. We make it scary for ourselves. We give people the opportunity to bring harm and terror onto others, our neighbors, our friends, family etc. Of course, I would love to live in a world where crime levels are low and things were great, but sadly that just isn’t the case. People will continue to be violent and resort to it, because they feel it’s their right to, since we give access to anyone and everyone to guns. Well, that’s what it seems like anyways. The United States has the most mass shootings than any other country. For as much as this country gives great opportunity and can do wonderful things for people, we also suck at keeping these gun laws in place. I don’t even know what to suggest because I am not an expert in any way, shape or form on gun laws or polices. I just know that its come to a point, where mass shootings are just a regular/daily scenario. It’s sad.
What’s even more terrifying, is that the day before the Pulse nightclub shooting, a young singer songwriter by the name of Christina Grimmie was shot and killed at one of her concert meet ups in Florida as well. The singer was just 22 years old. Many knew her from Youtube, for the collaborations she participated in and she also placed third on season 6 of "The Voice." She was shot and killed by a deranged fan. She died doing what she loved and enjoyed, all because someone was not in a stable mindset. How did he get into the venue heavily armed? Where did he purchase these weapons? All these questions come to mind when events like this occur. How did both of these killers have access to both areas while being heavily armed? Does security not care enough to check everyone in and look for red flags anymore? Is everyone supposed to fear for their lives when they go to a concert or out clubbing for the night? There are so many questions that are unanswered, and there were many shootings prior to this that were clearly not dealt with properly because we ARE STILL HERE TALKING ABOUT IT AND MOURNING THE LOSS OF INNOCENT PEOPLE. I understand it's someone's right as stated in the second amendment that they have the right to bear arms. Also I understand that not everyone with a gun has the intention to kill innocent people, some have them for their own protection, or just for other reasons but something needs to be done.
My thoughts are with those impacted by these events and the events in the past. People will continue to die and mourn if gun laws are not enforced. There has to be change. No more graves to dig.
