Just play. Have fun. Enjoy the game. -Michael Jordan

The "Washed Up" Athlete

You've played sports your entire life. From youth soccer in first grade to varsity soccer as a senior, you have always been an athlete. I've always enjoyed playing sports and they will forever remain an important part of my life because they have shaped me into the girl who I am today. What I've come to realize, however, is that college sports are just not for me. I'd like to share some thoughts about what it feels like to be this so called "washed up" athlete.

1. I Still Love the Game.

Many people will tell you, "if you don't love the game enough, don't play." This is true in some assets, however, any "washed up" athlete will tell you that they do in fact still love the game. Even though I may not be playing the sports I grew up playing, I still love them and always will. Just because I no longer play, doesn't mean I don't care about them anymore.

2. They Will Always Play a Huge Role as to Who I Am.

I've learned so many lessons and have grown so much as a person by playing sports. I've learned what it takes to be a true leader in life, how to work as a team with other individuals, and how to handle difficult situations. These traits I've obtained and the lessons I have learned will only help me in my future endeavors which I am extremely grateful for.

3. It's Okay to Choose School Over Sports.

You might have had the option to play a sport at another college or you could have played at the college you attend now, however, you chose to focus on your school work instead of sports. This is okay and doesn't mean you love the sport any less. At the end of the day, you are going to school to pursue a career in your field of study, not to become a professional athlete. So keep your head up and realize that you made the decision that best benefits you. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

4. You Can Still Play The Sports You Love.

Just because you don't play on a varsity team anymore, doesn't mean you should turn into a couch potato. Play an intramural, have a pick up game with your friends, or just practice! Just because you aren't on a team anymore, doesn't mean you have to give it up forever.

5. You Will Always Be in My Life.

The memories created, the lessons learned, and the people I've met along the way will always have a special place in my heart. Twenty years from now, I can picture myself still talking about some of these memories with old teammates, laughing and reminiscing about "the good ol' days." What I've learned from playing sports, about how to act as a person as well dealing with difficult people will be something I always carry with me. It will make me successful as a person and will only help me in the future.

So yes, I am a washed up athlete, but I still love my sports, and always will. Do I miss playing them? Absolutely. Do I miss my teammates and being a part of a team? Yes. But it's now time to start a new chapter of my life, which doesn't include being an "athlete." This new chapter is about school, my new friends, and what I want to do with my life in the future (and definitely some intramural sports in between).

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
