If you’re a passionate #TWD fan, then the season finale definitely got you twisted in so many ways. The anticipation of the Negan reveal has created a ton of room for expectations and disappointment and there have been mixed reactions to the finale so far. Many found the cliff hanger to be a cheap trick while others found it to be a great ending to an epic season.
Let's face it, we were all confident that someone was going to die in this episode. If you have read the comics, you would know that Negan's "eeny meeny miney mo" scene is the most iconic scene in the story. But unlike the TV show, the comic book goes through these motions very fast. Both Negan and Glenn meet their deaths quite closely in the graphic novels - Glenn being the one at the receiving end of Lucille. Glenn’s death in the original story happens so fast that you don’t even have time to think about it, which makes it more heartbreaking. You have this character that you have a great fondness towards and then suddenly he’s taken out like cake. With that being said, I can understand many people’s frustration towards the finale because they were probably expecting to experience that same notion of surprise. When we see Negan taking hits at someone without knowing who it is, it can definitely put a damper on the momentum of the show.
Scott Gimple stated in The Walking Dead that the death of one of the characters is going to inaugurate the new world for the troops, which is why it had to be saved for next season. Many criticize that in order for Negan to live up to his supreme villain disposition, that he must kill a beloved character. Characters such as Glenn and Daryl fit into that category according to fan base; however, I believe that it’s not about which character he kills, but the fact that he is the first villain who successfully kept the group from saving each other. This is the first time we see all the strong characters completely afflicted and vulnerable.
The theme of family and fighting for one another has been resonating so profoundly throughout the series. We see Father Gabriel rising to utmost bravery when he saves Judith and joins the others in fighting off the zombie marathon. We see Morgan venturing to find Carol on his own and succumbing to killing in order to save her life. Lastly, we see Rick holding Maggie’s hand as he reassures her that he will make sure she and her baby are safe. I can go on and on about all the relationships and bonds that all of these characters have created, but the point is that even if some of these characters don’t mean much to us as viewers, they mean a great deal to the rest of the characters. Rick tells Maggie in the finale that the reason why they have made it this far is because they have all survived together. If anyone of them were to be taken away, it would completely shatter the entire group's confidence that they can protect each other.
So..#WhoIsIt? Is it our beloved Glenn? Is it Eugene, our sentimental mullet man? Perhaps Aaron...? In my humble opinion, losing any of these characters to Negan would be terribly heartbreaking. Not because I am equally attached to all of them, but because I know through the characters' point of view, that it would break their spirits and their world. We have seen many zombie deaths and animalistic wolf pack deaths, but Negan is a form of evil that the series has not touched yet. He is beyond barbaric like the wolf pack. He is not exactly twisted and neurotic like the Governor. And clearly, he is not a walker. This ex-car salesman is a charismatic, well-calculated, quick-tongued degenerate. He was probably that guy pre-apocalypse that cheated people by selling them crappy, used SUVs.
All in all, the finale definitely sets up season 7 to be killer (no pun intended). Although I am sad to lose any of our dear characters, I am excited to see how the group will take down the monster that is Negan. It's going to be a long and difficult season to watch, but I am confident the story will continue to progress frighteningly, yet beautifully.
