The Virtue of Consciousness: A Poem
The Mindtrap

I can’t close my eyes just yet.

I’m looking at you all and a realization comes.

These lives are going to be the most profound

The most mundane

The most extraordinary

The most separate.

The love held in my heart is bursting, I hope you all realize.

I can’t go to sleep yet.

We are breathing and shouting and loving together

Breaking rules together

Fighting together

Living together.

There is too much beauty in this wide wide world

And too little time to see it with you all

That I can't sleep. Not yet.


This piece, originally titled, "AWAKE," was written as an expression of frustration towards time. We as humans are cheated out of time with those we love. There are so many books we won't read, so many foods we won't taste, so many smells we won't smell. Time is unforgiving. The reality is that we are not given as much time as we take for granted. So look around at those faces you love so dearly. And spend every single scrap of time you have loving them and loving this world. Don't fall asleep.
