By definition, humanity is the quality or state of being kind to another human being or animal. Well, let me tell you about the time my faith in humanity was restored.
There are so many negative things going on in the media with tons of ignorant and negative Nancy’s to match. It makes it hard for anyone to stay positive but there is a video that is going viral online that can change all of that, if even for a day.
On Tuesday evening, I was sitting on the bed, doing the usual social media check when I come across a video posted by a family member. In her comment she says, “I can’t stop the tears, if you haven’t seen it, watch it until the end.” I immediately click it to see what the fuss is about. The video begins with a homeless man sleeping on a bench. As he rests peacefully, a man walks buy and sneaks money under the homeless man. When the man awakens, he notices the money and begins to praise God. He then happily walks to the nearby Target and purchases a few things.
When he comes back, he sees a guy sitting on the bench. He is on the phone talking about how stressed out he is that he can’t afford his daughters medicine. Not knowing that this was the guy that actually gave him the money, the homeless man waits until he is off the phone and proceeds to ask the guy if he is okay. The guy tell the homeless man the issue and soon after, the homeless man asks the guy to watch his things. He takes the Target bags with him. Soon after, the homeless man returns with no bags and a handful of cash and proceeds to give the money to the guy. That is only a snippet of how inspiring the video actually is.
Watching this video was life changing. As people, we spend so much time praying for a better life as if we aren’t already blessed. We often take our current blessings for granted. I too am very guilty of this. I want bigger and better all the time, ungrateful for what I have. Meanwhile, there are others who are less fortunate with no one to help or guide them and here I am complaining about things that essentially don’t matter. Not only was this video inspiring, I was quite embarrassed. This man made light of situation. He had an opportunity to momentarily improve his situation, yet he felt as though someone who already had the necessities of life like clothes, housing and a job, needed it a lot more.
I was moved to tears. I sat crying uncontrollably, thinking of how I selfish I am every single day. The story ended with the homeless man receiving 500 more dollars on top of whatever the guy had already given him. This, my friends, is humanity at its finest. Don’t you dare say that it does not exist.
Below is the video that changed both my perspective and my life.
"Love is the crowning grace of humanity, the holiest right of the soul, the golden link which binds us to duty and truth, the redeeming principle that chiefly reconciles the heart to life, and is prophetic of eternal good." -Petrarch
