Something I have decided since going off to college is that family time is the best time. Yes, I love being with my friends, but I enjoy my time with my family even more so lately. I have given a lot of thought as to why that is, and here is what I've come up with:
1. You don't see them nearly as often as your friends when you go to college.
I have friends who only go home once or twice a semester... I go home more often than that, but it is still not often at all compared to seeing them every day for 18 years.
2. You especially don't see them in the same place at the same time.
I have two sisters with schedules just as busy as mine. So, catching us all in the same place with my parents as well is RARE these days.
3. You have to catch them up on what's going on in your world.
I KNOW they are just so curious about how my classes are going and the drama with my room mates.
4. You want to ask questions about what has been happening on the home front.
What do they even do now that I'm gone?? Seriously, please tell how you all spend your time.
5. You just want to squeeze your little sister so tight repeatedly.
SHE IS GETTING SO BIG. Maybe if I hug her tight enough, it will slow down. Okay maybe not, but her being taller than me is not okay.
6. You miss hearing your mom call you by your nickname and leave a lipstick stain on your cheek.
She calls me tiny. I never thought it was that cute till I see for the first time in a while and she says "Oh, there's my tiny!!" (I'm 5'1 oops). And then after she leaves, I look in my mirror and find a very prominent lip stick stain.
7. You want to hear your dad's voice in person asking if you are okay rather than on the phone.
Maybe it's a comfort thing. Maybe it's just because he can actually help me out if it's in person. I don't know, but I prefer it 10 to 1.
8. You want to feel the kind of love that only your family can give.
They know me better than I know myself. They make me laugh. They make my life so much more fun. They miss me, too. They are my favorite people.
So, the next time your parents ask if you have plans, say "Yes actually, I'm hanging out with my family." And you won't regret it.
