I cannot sing. I am terrible at singing, but I do it anyway. There is something so powerful and unifying about music. It can eliminate the awkward silence in a car ride, it can make people dance, laugh, cry, and smile, it can strike up conversation, and it can bond those who listen together.
My favorite memories revolve around music: a dance party with my closest friends in the middle of the school day or a road trip full of voices belting out incorrect lyrics. Even the tough times have songs; like that one break up playlist or rainy day song. A simple mixture of sounds can bring chills down our spine, make us dance for hours, or contain so much beauty that we pay for an over priced ticket to hear it live.
Religious services also have music. Why? Because it unites communities.
Teams get pumped up before games to a song or two. Why? Because it inspires greatness.
Our mothers sung us lullabies to put us to sleep when we were young. Why? Because it is peaceful.
A few of the best gifts I've ever received are concert tickets and a CD of my favorite songs. In times of crisis, artists will write a song and dedicate it to a particular cause. We have school songs, holiday songs, and even a national song.
I truly believe that music can change the world and bring peace. Here's to sharing songs and memories for years to come.
